Have a Springfield 1911 in 45 acp and would like to fit a 40 s&w option/addition.

What is needed besides the barrel/bushing fitted to my current slide?

I am kinda handy in the shop so any hints would be welcome.

Most likely a slide that is set up for the rim size you want.

A .40/10mm slide has a narrower breech face, the extractor tunnel is bored closer to centerline, the firing pin bore is half the size of the .45 ACP firing pin bore, the ejector cut is different, the ejector itself is different, you basically need an entire .40/10mm upper and a 10mm ejector in the frame. You also need a 10mm slide stop.

Other than that it should be fairly easy!

LOL. Sounds like this venture is doomed for a fast change over system.

Dang ... Nother pistol to save my Penny's for.

I once won a Springfield GI 1911 in 45. I already had a few 45's,,, so I built a 40 S&W just like you are considering. I replaced the slide, barrel, bushing, firing pin, ejector, extractor. And since I found an in the white slide,,, I added it's own sights. Oh,,, and don't forget the different magazines needed!

I really like my 45. I would hesitate to change what works so well.

If I could do a fast switch then I would be tempted to pursue this endeavor if I could just change the slide/barrel assembly ... But want the 45auto option always a quick change back to it.

You might be able to find a drop in .400 cor-bon barrel if you want to fire .40 bullets as well.

Brass is ready to form from .45 brass. I used small primer brass since I found a good bit of it once.

Once you have the frame and slide set up to eject .40 it will still eject .45. I haven't done it but know someone that did and he explained how he did it. The .45 slide will need the ejector slot widened in a milling machine to clear the .40 ejector and then you can freely swap between .40 and .45. The 'smith that did it used an STI 2011 frame and it ran flawlessly.

I second the 400 Corbon for another quick change option. Barrel, Barrel bushing, recoil spring and a set of dies are all that you need.

There are a few 400 Cor Bon barrels on fleabay, very reasonably priced, brand name barrels. But... Doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of a .45 to neck it down into something smaller? Never could figure this one out.

I figure I didn't have anything to lose, and it was a fun experiment.

It uses less lead, low recoil, flat shooting, and accurate from what I've seen.

I don't know how much practical use it gives me, but it's fun.

I think the 400 CorBon came around when Col Cooper \ Guns & Ammo \ and others were working on a "Centimeter" caliber cartridge - which eventually turned into the 10 mm.
Hard for the common man to play with because of the uncommon case head.
Peter Pi's idea was to use the common 45ACP case head already setup in millions of 1911's, neck it down, and launch a 180 - 200 g bullet at 10mm vel.
All you needed was a barrel, maybe a bbl bushing, same recoil spring and mag as 45acp.
(I lucked out, my Ed Brown 400 bbl fit the bushing on my SA 45.
The only drawback to me was that it was slow to reload bottleneck cases. (so I made a Caspian based 10 mm) lol
I just sold my bbl and a couple hundred cases a week or two ago in S&S.

I reload with 180gr and 155gr 40 cal bullets for my 400 Corbon setup. 180gr at 1100fps, 155gr at 1350fps.

Google GUNS magazine and see what George Nonte did for this in the 70's. His was 45, 9mm, 38 super.

I already own 1911 barrel/slide setup in 9mm, 38 Super and 45ACP in addition to the 400Corbon ;)

So if I have this rite ... Same frame settup for all the above? And they all run without hickup?

That would be super duper!

38 Special WC and 38 AMU are other fun potentials-if you can find suitable barrel and magazines.
Original AMU brass can be fun search as well.

No. Two different frames. one in 9mm with a backup 38 Super slide and a 45ACP with a second slide setup in 400 Corbon.
