From the top: M1884 Trapdoor, M1871 Mauser (bolt action), 1884 Martini (tipping block), and M1879 Argentine contract Remington rolling block. The bayonet belongs to the Remington.

For a couple decades these 4 different rifles could have been shooting at each other :-)

New South Wales mounted police carbine in 577/450 based on an Alex Henry left handed action.

It has the name W. Lang embossed on the stock which we have traced to William Travis Lang, a special constable assigned to assist in tracking down the infamous Ned Kelly gang of bushrangers in 1879! Made by Brendalin Arms Co (Scotland) in 1878.

A beautiful little rifle, but kicks like a mule with regular 577/450 loads.

Mr. Henry might have been onto something with the hammer on the left side. It gets it out of the way of feeding a cartridge into the chamber for a right handed shooter; or at least it seems like it would, I've never handled one of his rifles.

I am lead to believe the hammer on the left to place it as close to the horses flank whilst in the scabbard and was to minimise the possibility of twigs catching as it was drawn out!

That makes as much sense as anything.

Not being a fan of equine propulsion (I got bit by our Shetland Pony when I was in the third grade) I never gave mode of carry a thought.

Nice rifles and carbines above!

My collection of Trapdoors in 50/70 and 45/70. All have good bores and get fired time to time with both BP and smokeless loads.

The Rolling Block is a Model 1870 in 50/70 manufactured at Springfield Armory for the US Navy.
