Mould recomendation for .30-06 cast boolit?

I want to get a mold for my .30-06 so I can do more shooting with it at a MUCH lower cost. Do you have any recommendations for mould numbers? I'm thinking at least 150 gr GC mold, I won't be hunting with it, just targets and such.

that group on the far left with three on the top and (yes) two on the bottom is pretty good too.

.............Both previous replies are right on. My first boolit mould was the 311284 and my favorite load in the -'06 is 23.0grs H4198 + dacron for about 1650 fps.

However, probably one of THE best moulds would be the 311291. It's kind of 'The' 30 cal mould design.

rcbs 165 silhouette, weighs out nearer to 175 in mine it deems to fit most good 308
diam bbls, it is a g/c design.

Lyman 314299 sized .310, .312, or .314, dependng on groove diameter, works wonders in .308, .30/40 Krag, .30/06, 7.65 Argentine, and .303 British.

Amazing how the same "old" numbers keep popping up with a question such as this. 311291 is certainly a "standard" and has much going for it as a medium weight cast bullet. I worked a lot with 311284 but have found 311299 or more so the 314299 to be the better as the heavy for the '06. The RCBS 30-180 gr is also a good contender in the medium to heavy class. The RCBS 30-150 is a very good light weight cast bullet with the faster burning powders. All are godd for 100-300 yard shooting with the 314299 taking the lead for longer range shooting. For gallery or "cat's sneeze" loads the Lee TL314-90-SWC over bullseye is a favorite.

311291, 311299, 314299, 311284. SAECO #301. RCBS 308-165-SIL and 30-180-SP. But just like other things, size matters.

For a light bullet, go with 311008 plain base
For a medium mbullet go with 311291
For a heavy bullet go with 311284

Cast them from air cooled ww metal, use a gas check, and hand lube them. Lee NRA stick lube is fine, Lee liquit alox is fine to, just let it dry out a little before you use it.

2400 powder is hard to beat, especially is all yu are doing is general paper shooting.

I'm also interested in casting some '06 as well as some other rifle calibers. I'll mostly hunt with them. I want to work up a load for my '06 drilling barrel in the 170 to 190 gr range. Would you guys recommend round or flat nose for hunting ? Do they even make a FN mold in that weight? Anyone have any experience with them?

Flat-noses .30's in the 170-190 gr range? Just about everybody makes one. The Lyman 311041 (or 31141) is classic around 175 gr out of my alloy, RCBS makes a 30-180-FN that runs about 185 or so, Lee makes one that I can't remember the number on. All work very well for hunting and sometimes excellently for target.

I use the RCBS 30-180-FN which is a gas checked bullet. My load is 20 grs. of 2400 which give 1800 fps and 1 1/4" 100 yard groups with my 4X Weaver. I only taken 2 bucks with this bullet but both were one shot kills..........Creeker

I use unique, 5744, 3031 with a NEI 130 gr bullet. Cheap and accurate.

What is a good general start point in sizing for the bullet, for .308, and 06?
I sized a lot in .309, and haven't shot any yet. Does .310 lead less?
When I got my mold, it was for the .303 British. I sized 20 in .311. It is a gas check mold.
Gas checks are getting pricey!
My pulled, and sized M2 Bullets are .308. They shoot great. My thoughts are, .309 is probably ok, .310 may or may not be a little tight.
Any one tried this?

My advice is to get a 31141. It is a FN design and you WILL hunt with the 30-06 and cast. YOU CAN'T HELP IT. once you start getting the little groups, the urge to hunt with that bullet will be over powering.

My'03 likes the 311467 the best. (at 50 yds) shoots cloverleafs, well with a few fliers.

12.2 gr 2400 in military brass, avg velocity = 1255, SD = 8.49, Group = .871"
