When I was in High school one of my buddies had an old Savage 340 in 30-30.
I always liked that rifle and vowed to get one some day.
As luck would have it I found one late last year. I haven't had much time to play with it, but the LOP is very short so I ordered a heavy duty Kick Eez pad to help with that. The previous owner had put a Barska scope on it with a Weaver side mount.
I remembered that I had an older Weaver K4 stored away and thought it would be much nicer.
Iwas amazed at what a nice the the old K4 is. Really sad these have to be made in China or some other country. It really was a fine optic. It will look so nice on my new Savage.

Ill show you mine if you show me yours. LOL I love mine. It also is in 30-30. I just got done redoing the stock. It had a bur that would pull your whiskers. I remember the day the wife called and asked if I wanted it. I had never heard of one and said no. She replied are you sure he only wants 60 dollars for it and it comes with a bunch of ammo. (11 boxes of core lock). I said woman why are you still on the phone pay the man. She replied with I already did honey, its in the back seat and I'm headed home. I got a good woman.

If you can please add pictures as I have a sweat spot for these 340s now for some reason. Congrats on the fine and I am sure you enjoy working up some fun loads for it. Pointed bullets in a 30-30 what?

The 340 is a good rifle, they shoot much better than they have a right to. I have a Sears version in .30-30 and a Stevens 322 (same basic rifle) in .22 Hornet, also a good shooter.

They won't win any beauty contests, but they are certainly functional.

Great little rifles. I've had several over the years. I wish I still had the .222 I used on woodchucks back in northern NY.

I decided that I would refinish the stock while I was fitting the new pad. The stock was severely oil soaked. I used acetone and a heat gun to sweat the oil out. I used 4 rolls of paper towels ...
As soon as I get the stock finished I will post up some pictures.

I redid my stock. Used Tru oil. This is the first one I have even use Tru oil on. I think I like BLO better. This is 6 coats with a turtle wax buff. I like how it turned out. Sorry the pic is not so good. I hope yours turns out the way you want it. All in all it was fun and solved the issue of my whiskers getting pulled every time I put the gun to my face. The stock has no stain on it. If you look at the last pic you will see that the walnut used was not a prime piece. It has some of the Fat from the tree in it. One side is blond and the other is dark walnut. I kinda like it. So I left it.

I got a bug in my britches and decided to knock out the pad fitment and finishing. I sanded in the pad for a close fit, then finish sanded the rest of the stock all the way down to 400 grit. put 2 coats of Watco dark Walnut stain then finished with Watco satin finishing wax. After all the wood working all I needed to do was put the metal back in and that is all she wrote. (Notice the beautiful Weaver K4..)

Looking GOOD. Pictures never show just how good it is until its in your hand in person. Nice job.

Not sure what wood is on my 340. I thought it was just a very plain Walnut, but it did not act like it. Actually seemed harder and less porous.
almost resistant to the stain ? I like the plain look on it, seems a bit fitting.

Funny I thought the same thing doing mine. I think it is walnut just old growth wood. Harder and tighter.

I kinda thought it might be beech but I suspect you are right about the old growth Walnut. Still a nice piece of wood even if it is plain

If I remember correctly, the early models were walnut, while later were a more common hardwood, perhaps beech.

Yours looks like an early model, as best I can tell from looking at the bolt.

Fine old rifles.

Got a period correct Weaver K4 on my 340 as well. I think they look good on top of them.

I had a 340 in .30-30 years ago. Nice shooting little rifle. The action was a little short and when you loaded pointed bullets, they had to be seated a little deep. I guess with the short action, you need to stick with round nose.
