Got to be a responsible (?) adult on a TPWL youth hunt last weekend (post season). Ten youth got to cull doe from a ranch south of Johnson City. Dad took the younger and I got the older, who got sick and missed the Sun. morn. hunt. Younger got a small doe first nite, he's going to tan the hide. Tally was a doe, a spike (changed the rules the last hunt), 4 hogs. A couple college age volunteers helped the kids field dress and skin their kills. Almost all were shooting 243W. Sorry, no reloads or cast allowed. Parents (& me) learned a lot about processing game, had a great time with the kids. BTW, they had a hard time filling all the allowed slots (50% empty) so sign up the kids (IIRC it's 4-12 grade). I'll post pics when he sends them to me.

Good for you, it's always a good thing to take kids hunting!

I was totally impressed with the diligence and excitement these kids have. Not just the kill but the tracking & processing as well. One short one had been sitting on dad's legs for 2 hrs before he got a shot, couldn't take it and was upset. Next day was a brand spanking new one to him. BTW, the spike was taken by a gal, she processed it too. Amazing attitudes shown. BTW, it a free draw hunt, just personal expenses.

I love it when a youngster takes a deer. Unless they have been "over coached" by some grown-up who is obsessed by a big rack, a kid is thrilled with a small doe or a buck. I see quite a few really young kids sitting on a large racked 8-10-or 12 point. I kinda feel sorry for them because what they will probably find is that is not a normal sized deer. At least not around here. It will be very hard for them to top that in the years to come. I've hunted whitetail many years and the best I have been able to do is a couple of nice 8 pointers. I am mostly a meat hunter and those small bucks and medium size does eats best.

Sounds like a great hunt, hope the kids all had a good time and want to do it again next year. Thanks for a hunting story well told.

Wasn't a huge one, even by S texas standards, but he was thrilled.

That is awesome! I grew up in the boonies in Africa and all boys in our area got into hunting before they had hair on their chests. Come to find out later that I was fortunate without knowing it. I remember my first kill on an animal larger that a rabbit or guinea fowl and my grandpa was there. I miss him still, buried him in 1981.

He has the skin dried now but went to the store and asked the lady at the counter if she had any brains!! Then he explained what he wanted - after a real unusual look, I'm told. Evidently raw brains are used for softening hide.
