I ordered it last Fri. Got home and cleaned it up, then headed out back. She shot low out of the box, but 3 clicks up on the ramp and it was clanging steel at 50 yrds. Now my wife knows why I've been spending so much time at the casting bench. Henry 20" Steel in .45 Colt.

She sure is pretty.

How's the action? Stiff, notchy, smooth. How do you like the load gate? How are the sights? Fit and finish? What load and boolit were you using?

Action is smooth as butter. It's tube fed with room for 10 rnds. Semi buckhorn rear site with a brass front bead. Fit and finish is beautiful, I'm impressed. I was a little reluctant on the price but no regrets at all. I shot a few factory fmjs and then some cast 200 grn swcs. on top of 7 grns of bullseye. Thanks for the compliment. I've been casting a lot of 255 rf and swc. They are all lubed up, it's time to load up a few.

Nice rifle you have there. I can't wait for the 41's to hit the market. I will admit you did have my hopes up until I focused in on the 5 after the 4. I wouldn't mind having one in every caliber, but the 41 will be first.

If things keep going as they've been for Remlin. Soon they will become Henry's marketplace competitor in lever rifles. That tube fed 45 Sam Colt cartridge shooter sure is a handsome rifle.

Looks fantastic. Hope it shoots well for you. I guess it will be after tax season before I can get a .41
Maybe they will be available by then.

I love my Marlins but am tempted by the Henry .41. Your results sound are about what I have heard from Henry.

Good looking rifle, excellent review. If I ever tire of the 44 mag and 357 mag, the 45 colt is next to get purchased. After hearing all of the positives on Henry, they'll get a hard look

I'm waiting to hear how your rifle does with cast bullets at 100 yards. I have the Rossi model 92, and it's extremely accurate with copper bullets, but not very accurate at all with cast.

I have handled a couple of Henry's and they are very well made. Looks like you got a nice piece of wood on yours. I too am holding out for the 41 magnum. I also want a 357.

This weekend it's supposed to be 2 degrees for the high. Too cold. Maybe the following weekend.

Local Cabelas has one on sale and I'm thinking about getting it but am not sure how the 1 in 38" twist will handle heavier cast bullets. I'll be watching for your road test...

Bummer, ya'll stay warm. Sounds like a brutal cold front. Hope for better weather and a range report soon.

Congrats on the new Henry, they are fine rifles. You have the same rifle as the one I picked up last October. I had high hopes for our upcoming deer season. Hoping for a first kill with a new rifle and cast boolit, but didn't happen. First year in a long time I didn't fill any tags. It came with fuzzy sights from the factory, so I had to put a scope on it.

Ha Ha. Seems like every gun I have bought in the last few yrs. have come out of the box with fuzzy sights. Must be QC. This Henry is wearing a Banner now.

I`m assuming that with the rifle being a side eject that a scope can be mounted directly on top of the reciever? This sounds about what my BIL needs after tearing his shooting shoulder up in a trucking mishap and now being told no more recoil than possible on the shoulder.Robert

There available right now. I got mine yesterday and shot it at the indoor range. 25 yards. Action is smooth and it shoots very well. I love mine as I love all of my Henrys. I shot some 225gr Mo cast along with some of the Berrys 210 copperplate. It really liked Berrys with some unique powder. The 225 Mo Cast were not as accurate as the 210 for me but they were still acceptable. Al

It comes drilled and tapped. No need for the $27 Henry mount either. I picked this Weaver 63B top mount base up for $10.95 and it fit perfect.

What power scope are you using? I prefer a smaller scope that is lower in power than the typical 3-9x40, but I don't find a lot of "affordable" choices out there.

This is a Bushnell Banner 1.75-4 power. It has the circle X reticle. I wasn't sure I would like it on this rifle but it makes it easy to capture the bullseye, so to speak. I gave $75 for it about 5 yrs. ago and had it on a muzzle loader for awhile. It held zero with 150 grns. of 777 and Shockeys Gold. Found it in the cabinet and thought I'd give it a try.

If only the Henry's had a side loading gate..... I just can't get into loading a centerfire rifle with a tube like a .22, just seems like a cheap shortcut to me. Leverguns shouldn't be that way. If they'd change that, then they'd have my attention.

Fondled a Henry like the OP's today, same rifle except 38spl (357?). Didn't think I'd like it but after reading this thread I decided to look it over. I was wrong, it's a nice little rifle! Fit and finish were actually pretty remarkable and the wood even had a bit of figure to it. A little blocky-looking but I can get past that.

Don't get me wrong, pretty rifle! But, isn't a Henry supposed to look more like a Winchester than a Marlin?

One of the nice things about a rifle that's configured for pistol 'cat'ridges' is the number of rounds in the tube. As the man said, "You can load it on Sunday and shoot all week."

Got a Colt 45 SAA to go with that?

No, I don't have a Colt. But I do have this Blackhawk .45 Colt that will get along with that Henry just fine. I'll have to get a group photo to put up.

Looks like you've got a really great rig. I would suggest that you need a scabbard for the Henry that matches your belt & holster, but you probably already have that too.:bigsmyl2:

I just purchased a Henry Big Boy Steel in 44 mag a short while ago. I too was leary about the 1 in 38 twist and wasn't sure I would like the tube loading either but after just having a frustrating time with a 44 mag Remlin that had feed problems and couldn't keep bullets under 4 inches at 100 yards,I traded it in on the Henry. After seeing the Henry's 1-1/2" and under groups at 100 yards with 275 gr.GC cast bullets, the extra cost and the loading tube isn't even an after thought. However, mine came with the usual fuzzy sites too so now it sports a Leupold 2-7x on it.It might end up with Skinners though. It was a hard choice between the 44 mag or the 45 Colt.I do have a Ruger in 45 colt that shoots pretty good now that I had the chambers opened up and uniformed so there is still the possibility that it will get a long barrel mate yet.

Tube load is for 22's. A real rifle needs a loading gate.

smokeywolf
02-16-2016, 08:30 PM
Both the Volcanic and it's successor the Henry had end of tube loading. I dare say, they were indeed "real rifles". They were the foundations on which later lever actions were built.
I will say that Nelson King's ("King's Improvement") loading gate on the side of the receiver made a world of difference.

Stags do look nice on them. This came with the stock black hard rubber grips. I changed them out quick when I snagged these walnut from a guy for $25. I then swapped the black ones out for 200 once fired .45 Colt cases.
