I have not seen Alliant 2400 for a year, but was able to purchase some Blue Dot today. While I will use the Blue Dot mainly for loading 158 grain RNFPs hot in .357 magnum cases, I am wondering if anyone has loaded successfully 148-150 grain DEWCs over Blue Dot in both .38 special and .357 magnum. I am not looking for target type loads in the .38, I have Bullseye and Red Dot for that application, but rather +P and +P+ type wadcutter loads which can be fired from my LCR .38+P and .357 Blackhawk respectively. I'd like to hear your thoughts and whatever recommendations you might suggest.

Thanks,
TT

Living in the North Country, I have avoided Blue Dot since Alliant warned against its use in 41mag as it apparently becomes erratic in cold weather.

I think I saw something about NOT using it in 357 and 38 loads too but works well for my 44 magnum

I use it in 357 Lyman 358477's over 9.5 gr. It shoots pretty good .

Are you planning to seat the wadcutters out so there is the same capacity in your 357 case as there is with your 158 RNFP? Stuffing that WC so it's flush, with the same powder charge as you use with the RNFP, could result in some excessive pressures.

No, I was planning on seating the wadcutters normally for loads specifically tailored for wadcutters. I agree that using 158 grain RNFP data for normally seated wadcutter loads would be a recipe for tragedy.

The data I sent him has a 358495 bullet at 1.435"OAL. It's from the Lyman 3 cast handbook.

About 7 grains BD for a 38 spl +p.

For 357 mag, start around 9 or 10 grains.

Standard primers.
