I read the post on the Hornet plinker and noticed a couple of you gents use the same thing I do, namely fit a shotgun primer to the case - I find doing it this way I can push a 22 air rifle pellet from the bottom up into the case neck so there is no deformation of the skirt.
I have attached a couple of pics as I have trouble with explanations.:-D
Works really well with the feral pidgeons we get here and is no more noisy than my air rifle.

Will this work with .22-250? My dad says he is getting too old to pump his Benjamin-Sheridan.

What a slick idea!

I have long used a standard primer and air pellet in my 22 WCF. Always a fight to load the pellet.

I will have to check to see if I have enough room for a shotgun primer.

Thanks so much.

As has been said, you learn something everyday.

Interesting! What is the diameter we need to drill to?

ForneyRider - should work with any of the 22 centerfires as long as they can take a shotgun primer - the 22 hornet for example is too small.

Scrounger - I am not sure what drill size I used now - I have had this floating around for a couple of years. I reckon I would have picked something to give me a sliding fit - the primers are not tight and pop out pretty easily. From memory I used a lathe to put the bevel on but I would think that a larger drill bit would suffice.

When I get home I'll measure the hole and post the size.

Short of having a lathe for beveling the mouth of the drilled out primer pocket ..... a good sharp case beveling tool should suffice.

Gents, hole is a 'C' size letter drill - 0.242".
Good point Three44s - pretty much anything that would allow the little skirt part of the shotgun primer to seat flush will do the trick.

How do you seat the primer? Thanks this is too cool!!!!

The primer is just a press fit with your fingers - 'cause there is no powder and your shooting a light pellet there is little backthrust on the primer.

Know this is an old post. Has anyone used these to kill groundhogs at about 30 feet?
