I saw a Winchester model 320 at the show today and the magazine looked like the ones used in the Kimber model 82 rifles . I asked the owner about it and he said they were interchangeable . He also mentioned it was designed by the guys that made the Kimber .

Anybody know if that is a fact ?

.

Fact - The designer was a fella named Warne, who later designed/made Kimber rifles before he moved on to scope mount/rings making.

There was a variety of the 300-series rifles - the M-320 was the .22LR version; the M-325 was the seldom-seen .22WRM version.

Here's the skinny on Warne: http://warnescopemounts.com/our-story/

It's the other way around, Winchester started getting out of the rimfire business in the 70's. Kimber picked up the rights to the 320 & the 82's are modeled after the winchester 320. And actually allot of the parts can be used on either rifle.

If you'll scroll down, in the link above, and read about Warne (above), you'll find out that you're in error.

Winchester sold the model 310(single shot) and the model 320(clip feed) for two years. 1972 to 1974. IIRC the action was made in Australia and possibly barreled in the US.
the price of the 310 and 320 was more than Winchesters new model 190 semi-automatic. The 100 and 200 series of rifles dominated the market so Winchester dropped the rifles after two years.
The 310 and 320 rifles are high quality and good shooters. The magazines do interchange.

Thank you for that.

Back in the day we used to swap mags and things like striker springs between the 320's and the kimber 82's. If you ever look at the bolt designs on the 2 rifles you'll see that they're extremely close and parts interchange.

Comparing it to my model 82 there is a lot of similarities . I took it out yesterday and shot it a bit with some bulk packed Blazer and it did very well indeed , even with my old eyes on the open sights . I also noticed the receiver was drilled and tapped for a receiver sight . Anybody have one ? and how well does it work for you ?

Thanks , Jack

I looked at my 310 and it appears that the stock would need to be trimmed to fit a rear receiver sight. To my knowledge Winchester never supplied a rear receiver sight as an option. It would need to be aftermarket.

Same thing with this 320 , the holes are very close to the wood line . It makes me wonder who the aftermarket maker of the sight was . Plus , what did it look like because the bolt handle rides pretty high when cycling .

The biggest manufacturers of these sights are Williams and Lyman.
Both made one model (Lyman model 57, Williams ?) that bolted to the two mounting holes in the receiver. Those were model specific and aligned with the factory bead sight..
The second type used a semi-universal mounting base. One base had many bolt patterns that fit several rifles. The mounting base then had a standard mounting for the target peep sight. These sights were easily removed from the base to more easily transport the rifle. These were also used most commonly with raised aperture front sights.
You could get an idea by looking at Brownells for peep sights. Or Google pictures of Remington 510P or Winchester 69 or 75.
I am pretty sure that you could find a sight that would work for your rifle. There a couple of people that specialize in the vintage peep sights.

I forgot to mention that a peep sight is made that fits into the groove for scope mounts.
