I need a breech bolt for marlin 39a The problem with ordering parts is determining which model is "early" or "late". My serial numbers start with an H. numbers ar 22985. I see in some articles that an "H" indicates the manufacture date at 1951 but, the first to numbers "22" indicate a manufacture date of 1978..It says nothing about them in conjunction together... So it still begs the question, which letter or number indicate the manufacture year and still yet, what indicates Late or early models.... what is the year delineation for that term....Thanks

H would be 1951 or thereabouts. Marlin sometimes cut off one block of prefixed numbers before end of calendar year and started with the next prefix letter. The '22' is just the beginning of the rest of the serial. Marlin started using number prefixes sometime in the 70's, I believe. I would suppose a call to Remington with the serial number and/or year date of manufacture would clear up early or late. Just guessing, I'd say you have an early.

Hope this helps...

.

"Early" - IIRC, the "later" M-39a's are after 1975.
