Hey all,
I'm new to this forum.I found it by googling for a project I'm working on.I have a Knight LK-93 50 cal. with a 1:28 twist.I'm thinking about getting a Lee mold in 500 caliber to try in it.From what I've read this is at least theoretically possible. The mold throws a .501 bullet at 440 grs.Can I get this bullet to work in my rifle as cast, with lube?I'll be casting with pure lead.If that won't work, how about the Lee 450 gr. .515 bullet?I think my rifle has a .504 bore or so.It shoots Powerbelts very well, and since they are pretty much .500 caliber, I thought maybe the .501 bullet would work well.Plus I like that big flat meplat and the 440 grs.Any help would be appreciated!

It should work but you may be limited on how hard you can push them. Only trying will tell for sure. I have the Lee REAL, Target Minie and the improved Minie all in 50 cal. I could mould some up and send them to you to try if you like.

Hi Ruger#1 ,welcome aboard

I have tryed/did the 500 s&w with some luck it fit loose in some of the bores,,, and nice and snug in others...... .50 cal is should be .500 ( or 1/2 inch) but this verys alot from manf to manf you could end up any where from .490 to .510.... so most of it will depend on your bore/barrel...and you'll want to stick with pure-soft lead..... not ww ( don't ask me how i know;) )

Do you have anything for trade. I figured I would send you 20 of each(3) of the kinds I have for you to try if you think that would be enough for you to see how they work.

What do you shoot?Right now I have a bunch of .490 lead roundballs cast, as well as 200 gr. .430 rnfp cast from wheelweight. They're not sized and lubed however.I also have jacketed bullets in various calibers.

20 of each would be plenty to test. Thanks again!

I have been shooting 500 S&W bullet made from a LEE mould. They cast 456 gr with pure lead. I am paper patching them and shooting them out of my Green mountain barrel. this is what they look like.

I am having great luck with them. I use a over powder wad and with 80 gr of Pyrodex P I am getting 1310 FPS. This is a 50 yard target.

This one is a 100 yard group. Ron

I forgot to add that that at that speed, this load generates 1737 fPE at the muzzle, and still carries over 1000 FPE out to and past 300 yards.
My son calls these the moose maulers. Ron

The twist of my gun is 1-28. I use a felt wad lubed with Hornady lube, and the paper is lightly lubed with the hornady. This is the gun, it is a TC Renegade with a Green mountain long range hunter barrel. It has Lyman 57 SML peep sights and a Lyman 17 AML globe front sight with Lee Shavers inserts for long range BPCR. Thanks Ron!
I have the same barrel, and the same bullet!, but I wasnt getting quite the same results. The main differences are I wasn't paper patching and I was using 90
grns swiss 2f, I think I'll drop down to 80 and play around with paper patching.
I might also take that mold and machine the gas check lip out of it.
