What was the rifle? Very very nice buck! I am also a fan of the REAL. tell us the story.....I'll even start it for you, the mercury said 25 below but then we found out it had frozen and it was really 35 below zero, two foot of snow and blowing winds. ....

Nice deer! I've never hunted with the REAL bullets, always used the Lyman Plains bullet. I might have to give the REAL a try now.

I was assured the REAL cast bullet would not work in my Knight inline muzzle loader. I am so glad the deer did not know that. Or maybe MY shooting was SO bad I hit it by accident!

Congrats !

That deer would be pretty decent spreadwise for a whitetail around here , but the fact that it's a Blacktail makes it doubly special !

I've taken a train car full of whitetails a couple mulies and a small pile of Sika stags but as of yet I've not been anywhere I could have taken a Blacktail be it Columbian or Sitka !

So the story behind this deer started as soon as I walked out my front door( 2nd day of the season.) and sideways rain and 40 mph winds hit me. My usual spot I go to is on the other side of Siskiyou summit, highest pass on I-5.cA winter front was suppose to blow in that day so I didn't want to deal with Highway drivers and snow. so I decided to hunt closer to home about 5 miles as the crow flies. Once I got to where I could start hunting around 3300 ft elevation it started snowing, was bare ground. After walking different areas, I decided to cruise the blm roads and check out some new areas. I found a gated road and decided to walk down it. Well I cut three fresh doe tracks and a bucks track in the snow, I started following them and 2 more doe joined the tracks and another buck. I kept following the super fresh tracks and about 1/2 mile down a ridge I came around a bend and that buck was standing. One shot and it went down. The shot was about 11am and 8" of snow on the ground. The rifle was a Traditions Evolution, I put a peep sight on it. A musket cap nipple using RWS caps. In the Northwest rifles have to be open ignition, open sight and no use of 209 primers, no sabots, and only loose powder. I was using Shockey gold FFG powder. 110 grns I love the muzzle loader season just because the season runs Nov 14-Dec9th. Unfortunately it is a draw hunt so you only get it once every 3 or 4 years. The regular rifle season in Oregon is the month of October and usually its 80-90 degrees the beginning of the season.

Great story and thanks a lot for sharing!

The LEE REAL slug makes shooting an inline a lot of fun for me and works great on deer.

Congrats on a great blacktail buck! Is it a 3x4? Nice big body on it too.

You hunted the best place to find big deer in OR: walking down a closed road that no lazy truck hunter will bother with. With all the restrictions on hunting in OR its a wonder you even had a successful draw. And the rules about muzzle loaders... I don't even have one but still don't miss any of that junk! Down here in GA the limit is 10 does and 2 bucks, the season ran from early Oct to Jan 10, 2016! Muzzleloaders can have scopes, inline ignition, pellet powder and just about any type of projectile you can stuff down the barrel.

That is a very nice story and I'll say this supertodd that is a superbuck. It looks cold in your pictures. The snow really makes for a good hunt. Thanks for sharing.

Nice. What are you going to do with the head? Have it mounted? That's a keeper in my book! I've shot deer with home made Lee REALs and also factory stuff. Even round ball. All the same, soft pure lead is the key. Flattens right out, often found in the classic 'offside under the hide' position. The hide kinda bellows out on a thru shot and holds the ball. I'm talking standing broadside shots. Never had to go another way.

dualsport (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/member.php?6765-dualsport), not doing anything with the head. If I ever get a B&C then I'll have a mount done
