So there was a gun show a few blocks away from my work and I took a long lunch.

Bought me a stripped Anderson arms at lower. For 55 bucks.

Time to slowly piece this together over the next several months.

Going to build a milspec AR

Woot

Congratulations on joining the Tinker-Toy Team! I started with one and have built 4 four myself and several more for others who wanted to have one before the Democrats try again to take them away.

The Anderson is a good base lower to start with. The company does a very good job of ensuring a consistent piece of equipment. If you have any questions on the build, feel free to send me an email or text message.

Jeeze no kidding I just bought the stripped lower. That's all I have and I'm already looking at molds and load data for this thing.

I doubt this will ever see a copper bullet.

If bought in bulk you can get quality bullets (Hornady 55-grain FMJBT and 55-grain SP) for around $.075 to $.08 each.

Figure the time it takes to cast, the cost of a mold or molds, the cost of sizing die(s), gas checks.....just run the numbers before you start casting 'just because'.

True Xtreme bullets sells a 500 pack for 50 bucks.

Roze Distributing sells a pack of 1000 55-grainers for $80 shipped, and those are jacketed.

Congrats on the purchase! I started the same way, and now I have 3 separate ar15s and an ar10. I'm also looking at building more... It's addicting lol

Seems the first one is the most difficult one to get. +1....Hornady 55-grain FMJBT and 55-grain SP

Also, I know Monmouth Reloading is a Vendor Sponsor on here. They recently had a sale on the Hornady 55 grain SP and FMJ, something like $84 shipped for 1000 if I remember correctly. I bought 2000 to have on hand :)

It is fun and addicting and satisfying to build it your self, this 300blackout build I'm doing will be number I don't know. Get good quality punches is my best advice.

So that got my lower assembled went to put the bolt on the grip and its to long. I am sure I can use some washers inside the grip to make up for it.

But its odd that the bolt would be to long?

I've built several and never had a too-long bolt. How long is it? Are you 100% sure it's too long? If it is, you can always use washers to shorten it, but be sure it's really too long first.

No, not really. Did you chase the threads before assembly? Could be a burr or a mis-formed thread.

Make sure the safety detent spring is properly aligned? If that binds it will seem to tighten up with a gap left.

Of course, an inexpensive kit may very well have an overlong screw (not bashing, I hate that, just an observation). As long as you aren't using a storage grip, the washer suggestion should work just fine for an overlong screw.

I'll double check it all.

More likely the hole either doesn't go all the way through, or else it isn't threaded all the way. I had to install an extra 1/4" flat washer on one of mine last night in order to keep the pistol grip from wiggling.

After you get the 556 up and running, might I suggest looking at a 300 blackout upper?

If you reload your own, you can make some CHEAP ammo from most any .308 bullets on sale.

Having the option to go 556 or 300AAC with the same lower is super cool!!!

As for a barrel I'm really thinking about a .356 first.

I can buy bullets cheap. And can cast as well.

+ I'm looking at a mouse fart load. For my indoor range. Keeping it under 1200 fps. 22lr replacement.

I've never used an Anderson lower before, but I have heard that some have had issues with the threads either having burrs or just not tapped all the way for the grip. Doesn't mean they are a bad product necessarily, just sometimes need a little extra work.

This is probably a stupid question (it's early in the morning here!) but what caliber are you going to chamber it with a barrel that's .356? I'm familiar with some AR15 calibers, but not all. Sounds intriguing though!

I am eagerly awaiting a 7.62x40WT barrel from X-Caliber Barrels for my next AR build.

My four ARs all started out as spare uppers. That is one way to get into the AR-collecting business. Regarding the desire for 9mm ar,, that will require a specialized bolt, bolt carrier, recoil buffer, recoil buffer spring and barrel as those 9mm ARs are run as blowback carbines.

You can reload your 223 Rem to match 22LR ballistics and power a lot easier than rigging an AR for 9mm. you could also build a 22LR dedicated AR upper even easier...

True one the 22 lr thing. But I want a 22 lr replacement. As the price for those thing per round are getting out of hand.

+ on the bouns side It can shoot standers .556/223 ammo for fun when I go out in the fields.

Fixed it bought 3/4 inch bolt instead of the supplied 1inch. 50 cent fix.

Buy a 1/4-28x1/4" set screw and tap the frame all the way. Put the set screw in taking up slack in the trigger..lock tite it in place (make sure you don't go too far...and safety operates) See U-tube trigger jobs.

Use a bolt with a set screw and you can take out pre travel. The hole should be through and threaded all the way.
