Howdy all. I acquired a Husqvarna M38 recently. It is from 1942 and all numbers match.
I read online that if the range plate was not installed upside down, then the rifle was certainly messed with. The range plate on this rifle is installed sideways. I was wondering what the opinions of others are regarding that it is 100% certain that a rifle has been messed with if the plate isn't upside down. The reason I ask is could there not be various reasons why a plate might not be installed upside down, even to the simple fact that a worker maybe didn't pay attention at the factory when it was installed? The person I got this from has owned it nearly 20 years and that is how he received it. The plate also appears that it has been there for a considerable length of time. I have also come across a couple of other posts where people say their rifles have range plates that are not upside down and also appear to have been on the rifle for ages. You would think if one went to the trouble of finding and buying a range plate to add to the rifle, they would realize or make sure how they were supposed to be installed if they were all supposedly installed upside down. So I am curious on others opinions. Also, the oval metal tag on mine on the bottom of the stock that says S124 I assume is a rack number?http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j470/picadilly1/H38/IMG_7478_zpsxckz0aa3.jpg (http://s1087.photobucket.com/user/picadilly1/media/H38/IMG_7478_zpsxckz0aa3.jpg.html)

I'm not to sure about the plate, but you should reverse the quick release clip.
The way it's installed, the sharp edge will damage the stock.
