Benjamin 317

I came by a well worn pre-serial number Benjamin 317 that functions fine. I had some BB's and some .177 pellets and expected the bolt face to hold (magnetically) a BB which it did not. Is this correct ??

That is correct. BB models have hollow bolt Face.
First pellt gun I had was 317 made about 1955.
Killede alot of stuff with that rifle

Cliff55 is right. You can shoot lead BBs in a 317, but it is rifled for pellets, so steel (magnetic) BBs will do the rifling in the brass barrel no good whatsoever.
