Hey all! Here is a question for all of youse guys and gals that carry concealed revos. How many different types/calibers do you rotate through? For example: I Carry a pre-lock smith m65 in .357 during cooler weather or when I feel the need for more gun. When the weather gets to hot for a jacket or sweatshirt I switch to the smith 637 j-frame in .38 +p. But lately I have had my eye on another snub. A charter arms Bulldog in .44 spec. I really don't need it but I just can't seem to stop thinking that it might fill some specific carry niche that I don't have filled yet. (kinda like the Taurus .45 and 9 wheelies that I kick myself for not picking up when I had a chance!) So how bout it gang, how many types and calibers do ya'll pack??

I carry a couple different Model 10s and a Model 24. The 10s get more holster time.

The only revolver I carry is my Lew Horton 3-inch M29.......here's a photo of it. I carry it loaded with Winchester 210 grain Silver Tips.

If I have to use it, I don't even have to hit my assailant as it will burn, blast, and blind anyone in front of the barrel!:-D

I have a S&W Model 686 x 4" (pre-lock, 6 chambers) that gets a LOT of carry time from fall through spring. It gets open-carried in the summer while I'm in the back-country, too. I REALLY like the 357 Magnum for birth control scenarios of the retroactive genre.

I don't own any sub-compact handguns, at all. I can't shoot the things well. Colt DetSpecs or K-frame S&Ws with 2"-3" barrels I can hit with, but the difference between a 4" 686 and a 3" Model 13 isn't real significant. If it meant a lot, I suppose I would look earnestly for a DetSpec or S&W 3913--but the East German Makarov serves well for summer CCW.

I only have one carry piece.

A S&W 4" M28 I reworked to handle the 45 ACP cartridge.

If something were to happen to it, I would have to borrow a S&W M17 or similar until I could fix it.

A S&W 4" M-57, a 4" S&W M-19, but I mostly carry a 1911 in 45 ACP as I feel it is the ultimate fighting pistol...:drinks:

If I need to be "discreet", a 3" SP101 in .357 or, for open carry out in the boondocks, a stainless 4 5/8" OM Vaquero in .44.

Presently I don't carry anything but revolvers.

But I do rotate between a 3" Charter Bulldog I've had for years, a 2" Detective Special, and a 2" S&W 642-1. The Bulldog is a .44 Special and the Colt and S&W are both .38 Specials.

A S&W M640, .357 snubbie for discreet carry, a .44 or .45 single action the rest of the time.

If I had a good IWB high-ride holster for the 4-5/8", .45 Blackhawk, the M640 would probably never leave the house.

Just one, a 360. I have carried a 4 inch 686 in a Bianchi pancake on occasion, but I wouldn't call it a CCW option.

In the winter I carry a Smith 296 (the hump-back whale) w/CT lasergrips. In the summer it's either an old M36 or a new M642 (or both!) w/CT lasergrips.

I like autos but I don't want to worry about what "condition" my carry gun is in and I like being able to carry loads that might not always cycle properly in an auto and the fact that I can always pull the trigger again to get past a dud round. (Yes, I've had factory ammo fail to fire.)

Just my $.02.

Taurus model 85 ultra lite. Taurus model 605. Both in two inch, 85 in .38, the 605 in 357. In some fashon situations they are more pratical to carry than autos. In my opinion they are a bit uncomfortable to carry in inside the pants holsters as are any other revolver for me. Then again it depends alot on what your body type is, how much you weigh, and what your shape is. That's why they sell about a thousand holsters out there for the same guns.

My Colt Cobra snub .38 gets the most work in a IWB holster. This is my T-shirt and shorts option.

Next comes my Smith 66 2 1/2" during cool weather with a jacket.

Then it's my Smith 686 six shooter with a coat or open in the backwoods.

Eventhough I love my revolvers, my Glock 36 .45, Glock 19 9MM, and Sig P220 .45 get their fair share as well.

I just let the occasion and my mood dictate my companion.

My primary CCP is my 2" SP101.

My secondary/BUG is a DAO NAA Guardian in .32acp

Both guns and 30 rounds of ammo are in this picture.

I do not want to hijack..... but.

This post brings up a question in my mind.... does everyone that has a CCW rotation, train with these different CCW options?

Different methods/weapons/calibers/holsters = different training.... correct?

5-6-7 or 8 round reload
speed strips
speed loaders
38cal 44cal 45cal shells....

and the different recoil/recovery time/muzzle blast/sight picture???

Makes my head spin.

Anyone else feel this way?

S&W 640 2" 5 shot 357 for most carry, but also S&W Model 36 3" heavy barrel and S&W 3914 9mm pistol. The 3914 is ALMOST a revolver - DA on the first shot and semi auto on the rest. The best of BOTH worlds.

You do bring up a good point Chickenstripe.

On a fairly regular basis I practice in a defensive type mode. I am left handed, so all my defensive handguns are carried on the left side. The IWB is carried between my hipbone and belt buckle and the other holsters on the hip. Basically, going to the same place everytime to retrieve the weapon under stress. All my carry arms are double action type (no safety). The only one the differs a little is the Sig with the decock lever. I don't do the IDPA shoots, but they look like a lot of fun. May try them sometime. I basically keep my defensive practice up close and personal. Arms length to seven yards takes care of 95%+ of all self-defense shootings. Mostly point and shoot affairs. I don't fool with the tactile reloads for the most part. Most shoots involve a total of three rounds for all involved. I do like to watch those that can do those really fancy lighting quick reloads. I just don't put the time into it. My attitude toward personal defense is keep it simple and straight forward. I steer away from the small of the back holsters, due to the fact that I have always had a fear that a fall on an icy sidewalk etc. could result in a spinal injury. I don't like ankle holster either. Hard to draw while you're running toward cover with one of those. May work fine as a backup rig. More important than any weapon choice is using your brain to maintain an awareness of your surroundings.

Being surprised=getting hurt.

Sorry for steering off topic a little there. :-D

When the agent is offset in either the cycle vest or jacket with a wallet and keys, its hardly noticable. But most of the time its a Smith 61. Very flat, very light and hopefully enough to get the bad guys gun from him.

To follow up a bit on Chickstripe and EKA, I primarily carry, practice shooting, point and shoot, practice presentation with my SP101, and it has become my night stand gun as well. Its been regripped with Hogues, fits me well, and I shoot it well. Since it is one of the last things off of me at night, it goes on my night stand.

I could (and have in the past) used a full size revolver, but I had to answer the door one night, I went to it armed, looked out the peephole and saw the local Cheif of Police on my door step - death message for my wife. I was glad that I wasn't handling a long gun and slipped the big revolver in the back of my waist band and opened the door and recieved the notification and thanked the officer.

That got me started thinking about instances of neighbors who sometimes need a hand at night (an elderly couple lives next door and she fell not long ago) and I might have to answer the door any hour of the night, armed and having the option of going outside with my CCW ready to CCW seems like a good thing. I'm confident in the SP101's ballistics, 5 seems enough, so I just use it around the clock.

On a few occassions, I opt to carry my old Mod 60 in .38. Mostly because I still like it, shoot it, and it is a little lighter than the SP101. But over 90% of the time its the SP101.

My third CCW revolver is a 7.5" Blackhawk in .45 Colt. I conceal it with a Ford pick-up.

Drilling Man,

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, I like that M19.

Every time I see it I wish I had one made back in the 70s when that was a popular conversion.

Popular? Okay, when that conversion was possible.

Don't know anyone that would even consider it now.

Something like that might make me leave my 4" M28 45 ACP at home.

Thanks Straw Hat,

I believe there were only about 33 of them that Vern made...

At the time, Vern told me he sent one to S&W, asking them to put them into production. Vern told me S&W had it for some time, and when they finally sent it back to him, it was obvious it had been fired thousands of times...

Anyway, i really like it, and i'm glad i got when when i could...

when im carrying consealed for protection its allways a 1911. I practice with them, know them and shoot them well. I cant see taking a chance on using a gun im less familar with or one that i will have to think even for a second about what i have in my hand if **** hits the fan. that been said i do carry revolvers alot. If im going out in the woods or going to camp a revolver is about allways on my hip. Which one? who knows. Ive got over 50 of them and its a matter of what catches my fancy when i open the safe.

After carrying a gun for 15 years as a Deputy Sheriff, I just got my permit to carry. I'm not too sure about packing a shootin iron again. If I do it would be a 1911, probably a Kimber CDP. Now, I just picked up a 1910 Mauser .25 cal pocket pistol, that might be a nice hot weather gun. Somebody said, "a .25, that won't stop anything". I said your right, so stand over there and I'll shoot you, let's see how it feels!! He didn't say anything after that..

Ricochet

I met a cop who carried a .25 for backup. He'd known another cop who got shot with a .25 through a wooden door, hit right in the heart, and was dead right there. It's all about placement, pretty much regardless of caliber and bullet type. Nothing you can carry in a pistol's going to be 100% instantly effective with a hit anywhere in the torso. A .378 Weatherby Magnum or 12 gauge slug isn't, for that matter.

I have an old Charter Arms .44 Bulldog which I carry in a shoulder holster. The beauty of that piece is that the 240 gr. semi wadcutter that I handload usually keyholes at 7 yards.

Think of it.

I also like to carry my Smith 3" M65 but somehow it's just not the same.

The Bulldog is really something to hang onto when you shoot it and past 7 yards I don't have much confidence in it as a snake gun but seeing those profiles of a 240 gr. semi wadcutter going through the target sideways really makes it a real optimum.

I also carry an E.G. Makarov in extreme summer (tee shirt and shorts) and a M1911 when I feel manly, but the Bulldog makes me feel mostly like I will make the bg regret that he didn't get a real job.

My carry piece is a 1911, but I recently came by a Charter 38 Spec., that is a little lighter and easier to conceal. For woods bumming I will be packing a ROA, Colt 36(BP's), or 22's in ruger auto or Heritage 22/22mag. If I'm dressing light, I may slip a 25 auto in my pocket, but put the 1911 in the car. DALE

One. I wear jeans everywhere and a S&W 649 357 lives in the front right hand pocket. My wife extends the pocket about 1 1/2 inches deeper and the gun lives in a Nemesis pocket holster. About 3 times per month I walk down to the range and fire 50 to 100 rounds. The gun just works.
