Went to the local gun show today and found this birdshead Single Six chambered in .32 H&R Magnum. This was just about the last thing I was looking for but I already have a pair of birdshead Vaquero's and thought it would be cool to add to collection, you know how it goes. Anyway the dealer threw in a box of ammo but most of what I shoot is cast so am now looking for reloading supplies including a good mold. Any suggestions on molds, powders etc? I've never loaded for anything so small so am curious what others are using.

Dale53 should be chiming in here soon. He is doing some serious load research on the 32 H&R right now.

My favorite is the Saeco #326 over Universal. Plenty of data available.

For boolits, my two favorites are RCBS 98 wad cutter and NOE 315008 we'll one more, the NOE 315115 Semi Wdacutter.

Powders, LongShot, WC820, ProReach, 4756 and Bullseye.

Brass, Starline.

I feed a couple of early 80's Single Sixes. Reminds me that I need to go unload some brass....

I don't cast for the .32 but I like bullseye with 100gr SWC from a local vendor.

311316 and AA#9 ( perhaps the best high performance powder in a .32H&R mag.). I have an NOE mold for a booit with three crimping grooves and used 10.0 grs #9 with it (just about max. load). Went to mountain molds and designed a 120 grain boolit that uses up just about all of the single six chamber. Kinda wonder what to do with my .327.

I have been casting bullets and reloading the .32 S&W Long and the .32 H&R Mag since the H&R's were introduced. I currently am running a S&W Model 631 (4" target sighted "J" frame), a 16-4 S&W (6" barreled "K" frame target revolver with Red Dot Sight) and a Ruger SP-101 (4" barreled small frame double action with a Red Dot Sight).

After they were introduced (.32 H&R's) Federal's brass was junk and there was no other supplier. Further, Federal quit selling components to reloaders at the time. Factory loads would give several splits in a box at the first firing and every time they were loaded, the same thing happened. As a result, I was lucky to obtain a quantity of .32 S&W Long once fired brass and did most of my early work with the S&W Long. Fortunately, I got good results using the shorter case.

My favorite bullet is the RCBS 98 gr. SWC. However, they only offer that in a two cavity mold. I prefer gang molds. I recently got an NOE five cavity mold for this bullet and have excellent results. My "middle of the road" load is 3.5 grs. of HP-38 in the .32 H&R Mag case. That is my general purpose load and regularly shoots 1" groups off a rest at 25 yards from my 16-4. That same load does 3/4" groups at 25 yards off a rest using my TC Contender with custom (.314") barrel from SSK (J.D Jones). That load works extremely well for edible small game.

Here is a short report of my results along with targets:

http://www.artfulbullet.com/index.php?threads/new-noe-rcbs-32-103-swc-at-the-range.848/

Using the .32 S&W Long case, the same bullet with 2.8 grs. of HP-38 works well and was my "go to" for these guns for a long time.

Starline .32 H&R Brass is reasonably priced and lasts nearly forever. I buy it by the thousand at a time. I buy all Starline brass direct for best price (price includes delivery).

Since NOE just ran that five cavity mold for the RCBS 98 gr. SWC (mine weigh 105 grs after lubing/sizing from the NOE mold), Al may still have some extra molds, if you jump on it FAST.

Here is the original buy (scroll down to page three for a complete drawing with specs):
http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,1038.0.html

Tell him what diameter you want the bullets to cast as he offers the mold in a couple of diameters.

Good luck with your new acquisition.

I bought a Ruger SS in 32mag when they first came out. Adjustable sights and a 45/8 barrel. I started casting and reloading for it from the beginning. I'm still loading some of the Federal brass I used from the start. I didn't have a problem with the cases splitting like Dale53 did. I also have a good supply of Starline.

I've been casting the Saeco #325 95gr. swc and the Saeco #323 95gr.wc. I also have the Lyman 313631 100gr swc gc that I use a lot. It has a small edge on the others when it comes to accuracy.

I size them all to .313.

I load 7grs. of 2400 and 3.5grs. of 7625 with the swc and 3grs. of either Bullseye or Red Dot with the wadcutter.

Accuracy isn't hard to achieve with the .32mag. Recoil is, of course, very mild. It's a great round for plinking and small game hunting.

Sorry for the slight derailment here, but I load for a M31-1 Smith as well as a single six. A quick question of Outpost75's post.
I am loading the 2.5 BE load in Long cases with the NOE RCBS clone for the SS. Is there a concern shooting those in my 31-1 ???
I want to have one load for each case length and that load shoots very well in the single six. It shoot's well with 2.7 of BE also but I do think that might be a bit stiff for the Smith, so dropped it to 2.5gr.

Also, relative to this load.. "Using the .32 S&W Long case, the same bullet with 2.8 grs. of HP-38 works well and was my "go to" for these guns for a long time."
Dale53, what are your thoughts of that load in a M31-1 ? May try it as an all arround possiability. I have that NOE 5cavity also, and it sure spits out LOTS of nice boolits!!!
Thanks

Those little Smith's are actually pretty stout platform's. I have a snubby and those loads work quite well.

Thanks,Dale53, Mines a 4 inch. Really nice little kit gun, lighter than my bearcat. It's hard to find much data on 32L in modern guns, and the Lyman loads don't shoot as well as the slightly stiffer loads I have worked up. 2.7BE with a Lee93 shoots really well , but I stopped using it in the smith when I could not find my original data source. Now with the NOE100 and Mihec's WC I am starting load workup again.

Mine is s single six and it sees a lot of the 32 RCBS swc and 3.5-4 gr Unique. Use the 90 swc Lee and 2.5 gr red dot in 32 long cases.

RCBS Cowboy mold & Universal powder. I came across a used Bisley Super Single Six in LGS years ago, before .32 H&R was popular with CAS. I went out to my truck and dug out a Midway catalog (that's been a while) and saw that Starline offered brass for it, went back in and bought it. I shortened the barrel to 5 inches and opened the cylinder throats up. It is a very accurate handy revolver.

Any of you use gas checks or all plain base? What kind of top end velocity are you talking about with 100 - 115gr boolits?

I have the blued version of that gun. The NOE 115 gr mould over 10.0 gr h110 shoots to the sights. This load is not suitable for weaker guns but has been published (by Brian Pierce I believe) for the single six .32 mag. I really like this load and generally use gas checked 115's although my mould also throws a good plain base.

Markbo, I use a gas check on the Lyman 313631 100gr swc. I'm getting about 1100fps with the 7grs. of 2400 but that is not a top end load, just the most accurate in my gun. I've loaded up to 8grs. of 2400 for a top end load for around 1200fps.

Out of a single-shot pistol, I get excellent accuracy for silhouette shooting with 311008 and 9 gr. of IMR 4227.

I load 32 magnum cases for my Single Seven .327 since they are easier to find. Lee 311-93-1R, as cast with 45/45/10 lube. 4 grains Unique. Probably the most accurate center fire handgun/load I have. I tried a load with Tightgroup but it didn't group well for me.

I've had my SS since they first came out. Been reloading for it since then. I mainly load jacketed bullets but also load the Hornady 90gr SWC with 3.2 of 700X. I want to get the RCBS 90 cowboy mold since I recently started casting.

Lee 90 gr. SWC and Lil Gun work great in mine. Also use MBC 100 RNFP store bought.

RCBS 32-98 SWC over 4.1 grains Unique is very accurate from my S7.
