Ruger American .17

Coworker bought one of these used but in like new condition. We went to the range and he could not get the gun to fire.....pulled the trigger heard the firing pin hit but no bang. He was thinking the ammo was old so he bought new stuff and it would fire off and on but not consistant. We looked at the rounds that didn't go bang and could clearly see the indentation of the firing pin. Is this a common problem or known problem with these guns? I don't own one so I'm reaching out for ideas on whats causing it and ways to fix. Thanks

Got to be the rifle, I have a Savage .17 and I've never had a problem like that, how's the firing pin spring? The ones that fired do they look like a good strong hit or barely went off?
I have the Ruger American in 30-06, I've had zero problem with it as well.
