anyone have any experience with the lee 229" gas checked in a m95 steyr? Are you using it with the check? or bareback? thanks

..............acsteve, you best slug that critter before investing in the Lee .329" slug. I'm pretty sure you'll find that the grooves will be .330"+. I have a M95 and 2 M95/31's and they all slug .331" or .332". On the other hand I will add that I've never tried a .329" cast boolit in them. Considering the bores have equal width lands which usually run .316", when you stuff a .329" slug in there you're asking a lot of lead to be moved around. It just might be the .329" WOULD work?

I have the mould but have been using the RCBS and Lee moulds for the 338, then sized down to .332". I only bought the Lee .329" mould in order to feed a 8x57 M24/47 Mauser with a .3254" groove.

I have an M95 with a 330 bore. The mould drops at .330. Wish it were a tad fatter but works just fine in general.

OTOH, I had (sold) one with a .333 bore....never worked well with cast, at least at this diameter- bullet didn't fit right.

I have a Steyr that works well with a Lee and the use of 8mm Gas checks. I use it unsized and cast of a WW alloy and tin. I have not had as good of luck with a down sized 338 mold. So far it has been working with 4227, am still in the process of playing.

I used to have a few 8X56R Styers. The 8mm Hornady gas check worked fine with the .329" mold. The .329" mold shot just as accuratyely as the .338" cast slug sized down to .333" in my carbines. Granted, I never tried to load full power cast loads in it, sticking with C.E. Harris's plinking level loads. With this level of load, even unsized .338" cast and jacketed bullets worked OK in my Carbines, since all had large throats. However, as I said before, I never loaded hotter than plinking level (1300-1500 fps).

Like Buckshot said, the wide. tall lands most of these rifles and carbines have probably will causea .329" slug to upset, and fill the grooves of slightly oversized barrels, except for perhaps full velocity loads, where they might lead.

Good luck, and be safe.

Sean.

P.S. I believe .338" gas checks are becoming difficult to come by.

WOuld this mold be a good one for and 8mm Mauser? That is, the Yugo M-48 variety?

It might work for a Yugo M-48, but you will have to size it down to approximately .324"-.325" I don't know what their throats are like, so it may need to be seated deep. But I have not tried it yet for myself.

have three steyrs, 329 and very smooth, 330 and really good and a 331+ with quite a bit of frosting. Really interesting actions though. Just a want purchase and certianly not a practical purchase at all but really fun to shoot. Have been wondering if anyone has a better load than I am using, tried the a8700 loads, they didnt burn well, and a3100 at 49 gr and j-bullets shoot pretty good but really want to move up to the lee cast and need load advice. Will try them unsized.

................The nose of the Lee .329" slug (in my alloy) mikes .320" and .330" on the drive bands. I fished out the M24/47 I'd cast these thing for, pulled the bolt and upended the rifle and dropped in one of these slugs. Dropped a 5/16" brass rod behind it and smote it a couple times (I felt Biblical :-)). Now I know I have a .329" throat and the .320" nose WILL engrave! Looks like I'll try sizing it down to .327" to start with.

Just to be fair to the M95 I'll have to hand lube some of these, then seat a GC in a .329" push through die and load some up. Pretty much just to say I did, HA!

Dunno 'bout a Yugo, but, sized to .325, it looks like it's going to work pretty well in my VZ-24 sporter. Only had the opportunity to run one batch of test loads so far but the WORST of my first time out grouped around 2" @ 50 yds (iron sights).

Yes I use this combination. Have not bought a size die or gas checks yet. Coat the boolits with LLA and seat over 8.5 Herco and got 1" groups at 50 yards. Another good load is 23.5 H4895 with the rest of the case filled with spherical shotshell buffer. I have not slugged the rifle. I think the boolits cast at .330 but don't have any to measure right now. I have gotten away with undersized boolits on several occasions so I don't worry about it until such time as it doesn't work.

i mistakenly purchased lee's 205gr mold for my 8mm mausers. the mold casts at .331, but works well in my yugo and turk when lubed with lla and sized .323. 23gr of accurate's mp5744 or 32 gr of surplus 4895 chrono 1800fps and provide enough offhand accuracy to consistently hit 1/2 gal milk jugs at 200 yds.

i recently acquired two m-95s, got a lee .329 sizer, which i honed to .331 to seat gas checks, and used the mauser load data with the same results. reportedly, the m-95 kicks like a mule and shoots 6-8" high at 100 yds with factory ammo...this load is comfortable and prints on the money with my rifles.

Mine throws bullets that are about .330-.331". I use them with gas checks and Lee tumble lube. They shoot fine at 25 and 50 yards.
