How do you folks carry your 22 ammo in the field so it is convenient to access? I have been looking at the Fur Fish and Game pouch and it seems as though that might be a good way to do it.

I like the round, plastic snuff cans....they'll hold 20-30 rds pretty easily, and keep it dry / together. A bit of cotton/pillow stuffing keeps the rattle to a minimum as well.

Glad yall brought this up, made me go out to the shed and make a "speed loader" for a tubular magazine rimfire, in this case a .22 Marlin M60. If you know an old bowhunter see if he has some 2117 aluminum arrows. 21 means 21/32" diameter and 17 means .017 wall thickness. A .22 fits inside the hollow arrow tube just right and the whole thing fits perfectly in the loading end of the tube magazine. This gun holds 13 in the mag with the bolt open. Drop 13 in the arrow, measure with a smaller rod down to top of bullet, add a bit for whatever you're gonna use for a plug and cut of with tubing cutter. Make sure the plug is something that fits tightly but you can still twist off. I don't remember where I saw this but just thought of it again when I saw this thread. Got 2 others I'm gonna "custom" fit, and will prolly load five tubes for each.

I made some of those to hold 5 for topping up my SA22, they fit comfortably in a pocket. Epoxy plugs one end, a foam earplug is the "cap".
I use an old rockclimers chalk pouch sometimes when playing with my single shots or revolvers. A few in the watch pocket works for hunting.
10-22 mags fit perfectly in an old nylon double speedloader pouch I found in a junk box one time. Generally just drop an extra loaded mag in the pocket for hunting.
Honestly, more often than not, just dump them in a pocket :)

PS whats a Fur Fish and Game pouch ?
thanks

The old crossman pellet containers had two belt clips on the back, still use them from time to time. Normally just put them in an unused pocket if I am using a single shot.

I use a plastic lined leather tobacco pouch with zipper.
I`m not sure you can find them these days , as I`ve had mine a number of years.
They are soft, fit in the back pocket, and hold a lot of ammo.....dale

Someone used to make a small bell shaped pouch for 22 ammo. I think it was one of the holster makers. I had one when I was younger....40+ years ago, but don't know what happened to it.

Sort of a 5 round dump box like I use to carry my 44 mag ammo in.

Plus 1 with Dale on the tobacco pouch with zipper. I have one that I've been using for so long I don't remember when I started using it to carry ammo. The pouch will easily carry 100 round fairly flat so it's easy to carry in whatever pocket that is good for you to access.

Edit: forgot to mention, it doesn't rattle when you move.

There is a plastics mfg place with a store front where my parents live, years ago they used to give away blems. I was a kid and went in there one day...they had blem match cases water tight they were making for survival kits etc....they had a SKID of them, I probably filled up a grocery bag with them. I still have a bunch and have used them to carry rimfire around. Other than that altoids tins or even the fancy MTM wallets. Dad just got me a few 10 round "speed strips" for christmas and those work really well for revolvers or single shots like the contender.

Midway and Cabela have a hard plastic pouch with a flip lid.

edit ..more like a cup thingy

MANY extra FULL clips.

Loose ones go in Altoid metal tins.

Works for me.......when I DO shoot 22's these daze.

If you MUST have an ammo box, I also use a Berry's 9mm hinged plastic box. You can alternate base / nose to get a bunch in there! Two 22's per hole. Take all the "bases up" first, then you can easily get ahold of the "noses up" ones left. I get at least 100 rounds in a box.

Getting technical now heh :) Another option is the screw top tins for air gun pellets! or the plastic boxes pellets/bb's come in.

Thanks roysha, I'll look into that, looks like it might be handy if quiet. I can't stand things that rattle when I walk, might not scare the game but intrudes on my "quiet time":)

It's not as classy as the other ideas but I just throw a handful in a ziploc bag. They're cheap and quiet.

I dump a box in the top pocket of jacket or shirt.

My first pouch was a cast off tobacco pouch of the old coin purse variety. Smelled like cherry tobacco too.

The other cool idea is one of those plasticy rubber coin pouches, the round or oval ones, about 2.5-3" wide. they had a slit in the center and it opened when you pinched the sides. I was going to pick one up for .22's but the only place that had them wanted way too much.

Pill bottles for loose, 40mm surplus grenade pouch for 10/22 rotary mags, cheap airsoft 1911 mag pouches (too small for real 1911 mags) for Ruger MK mags.

Belt clip , swivels, just tip to get single rounds or pellets. Easy to make. The one for pellets holds about 100 .22 pellets, the larger one holds 50 .22 LR.

I used to always have loose .22lr in my pockets.

Now since Ruger came out with their 25 round BX mags I just grab one or 2 of those.
I also found a small plastic plate that lets you mount 2 10 shot mags back to back. That is the ultimate in handy.
It was just a friction fit, ended up padding vise jaws to get thems squeezed all the way in, but it is very convenient, and inexpensive.

I use ziplock snack size bags. They are about 1/3 the size of a sandwich bag. As a kid I could reach into any jacket pocket and find .22 lr. anytime! haha or the floorboard of my truck or the trunk of the car or in both top drawers of my dresser!

I think those were from Safariland, made from their green elk suede. A bit of a search turned up nada, though.

For the past 30 years or so most of my hunting and fishing trips have included a S&W Model 34 .22LR revolver, handy for any edible critters that come along. I have also taken a 2 lb. trout with it once, and several rattlesnakes. Box of .22LR goes in another vest pocket, but I seldom shoot more than a few rounds in the field.

MTM flat wallet shaped cases for me 30 rounds in each one all snapped in the same direction. Makes loading much faster and if your reloading in the field you need speed and easy carry.

An Indian friend I have in Texas made me a tie on leather butt cuff with a raised "Pouch" designed to hold one box of 50 .22lr cartridges. Same brand in the tubular magazine and same brand in box contained in pouch.

I just put a box or part of box in pocket when out walking and plinking or hunting. The Old fieldmaster holds a lot and usually don't have to load much unless there are lots of squirrels, bunnies and birds and I'm having a bad day. LOL, 10

Exactly what I had to add, chew tin with some cotton balls, water tight, and easy to carry/get to.

It has been a few years but I usually just dumped a few rounds in my right front pants pocket. If it was winter, the right hand coat pocket. When I was a kid, I mostly used single shot bolt actions, so the right hand pocket made it easier to reach the next round.

With tube or box magazines, the location of spare rounds didn't matter as much; but the round count per squirrel or rabbit seemed to go up.
