My wife is having her left knee replaced tomorrow. The right knee was done one year ago, so we know the drill. As some of you know, I have been fighting cancer and have very low energy.

Please pray for the surgery and recovery and may God have the glory! Amen.

You've both got mine, certainly. Recently got a high PSA so I may well be in the same boat with you on the cancer thing. Have a doc's appt. this a.m. and will do further checks. Just keep the faith. It can see you through things even money, family and friends can't.

Thank you All for your prayers and posts!

I have been in prayer much of the day myself and was concerned but worry free. The surgeon took more time than expected and God reassured me that the extra time was well spent so he could do an excellent job. Todays surgery was complicated by an old surgery and steel plate in the tibia that was also removed. The surgeon was quite pleased when it was all said and done. There were concerns that the tibia may fracture but that did not occur.

There is more back story than I care to type right now. I'm in a relative remission period right now with little pain, so I expect to provide her care in the coming weeks.

One other little item. Our eighth grandchild was born last night! Caleb Michael weighed in at 8# 13 oz. He and mom are doing well.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Amen.

I don't think there's anything more valuable to us than knowing prayers really ARE answered often, just as we request them to be. Thanks for the update, and thanks to God for the outcome. Often, we forget to say "Thank you" to God after He's been good to us. It's our humanity coming out, I think?

Well said Blackwater! To God be the glory!

Let me bring you all up to date. Surgery was on Wednesday. It was not until Thursday night did they get a handle on the pain. Simply adding Tylenol to the hard stuff did the trick.

When I came into her room Friday morning, my wife was back to her cheerful self! Alert and planning her trip home.

She was released today (Saturday) and she is doing remarkably well, much better than last time!

The only concerns now is I am dog tired. Speaking of dogs, our younger dog is acting up. Nothing terrible, I guess he's just sensitive to the break of routine.

Again, thanks for your prayers and give God the glory!

Wife is regressing a bit. Wound is not healing. Still unable to start physical therapy. She's hurting, grouchy and just plain not feeling well.

The surgeon has referred her to a wound specialist. We see them this morning.

I'm holding up ok, but need some time to myself to do taxes and such. The wife is always my first responsibility.

On a lighter note, our 4 yr old grand daughter stayed overnight Sunday. The younger dog was in heaven with all the attention.

Things have gone downhill even more. She has a staph infection now. They admitted her to the hospital this morning for IV antibiotics. PICC line going in now.

I hate to talk about myself when she is so bad off, but I'm exhausted and feel guilty for not helping as much as I could. I've lost 10 pounds in the last month and I need rest.

I'm at the hospital now. She's so tired and groggy but the fever is down.
We expect several doctors today. The results of a cat scan that will determine if surgery will be required to clean out the new joint.
I hate to leave her alone until we have word.

Prayers continuing here for both of you. With surgery, the hardest part is often in the recuperation period, but once through that, we have a literal new lease on life, even if it can't make us 16 again. I can honestly, at least, say I'm a much happier and thankful and circumspect man now than I've ever been before in my life, and that ain't no small thing. God is truly great, and always knows what he's doing MUCH better than we do. Y'all just love each other and let God work for you. Trust him, and no matter what occurs, you'll bet through it better for the experience. Times like these ALWAYS bring us closer to God, which I suspect is the reason He lets bad things happen to good people. It's kind'a like when we heat steel up red hot and then quench it. It makes it stronger. We're not unlike that at all.

Praise God, from the CT report it appears that no surgery will be needed. A special bone scan will be done Thursday or Friday to determine if the bone is infected.
Jane sent me home yesterday to get some sleep. She had lots of visitors including our 3 grown children, a daughter in law, two grandkids and our pastor. Our daughter stayed with her overnight and will do so again tonight.

I am looking forward to a good nights rest and will go back in the morning. It's her birthday tomorrow so I'll take her a flower and a cupcake to share.

The news is not what I wanted to hear, but the wound continues to grow as the infection is spreading. The tests over the last 2 days show infection deep in the tibia. The big praise is that there continues to be no infection in her blood!

I just texted Jane and she desperately needs sleep. She called to say goodnight and had a good cry.

She will have surgery on Tuesday to clean the new joint and possibly remove it until the infection is under control. A week or two ago we had no idea that she would be in this position today.

Meanwhile, I see my oncologist Monday for my routine battery of tests and injections. Our tax appointment is Wednesday. Life goes on.

Thanks for your prayers and concerns.

Our thoughts are with you.

Ken in Iowa

Thanks Boaz. I woke up sick this morning. I'm torn whether to visit her today or not.

I'll get 2 shots at the oncologist today. One of them makes me sore for a couple of days.

I did reschedule the tax appointment until next Monday. I'm just so tired, mentally and physically.

Jane was visited by about 6 angels when the PICC line was giving trouble. The issue was resolved with their intervention. Our pastor referenced Daniel chapter 10.

Our dogs are getting upset. I believe we are in a spiritual battle with the evil one. Contrary to some people's beliefs, I prayed over my dogs this morning and commanded the evil ones to leave them alone. The dogs both looked me in the eyes in an odd manner. They went to sleep and my strength was renewed. Praise God!

I don't discount that Satan is being a problem , he involves himself in every aspect of our lives . Many times realizing he is trying to influence me I have said;......Get behind thee Satan!
Dogs are likely to be upset because of your situation right now , Your wife gone and you not being around as much . Plus they like small children know when things are not 'right'.
Try and get rest when you can Ken , you can't afford to get down .

Thanks for giving us the opportunity. We never really know what God's will is, or why it is what it is, but He promised if we'd ask, he'd grant it if there wasn't an over-riding good reason not to. He knows so much more than we can that sometimes I'm sure we ask for something that, in the long run, would not be good for us ultimately. He knows these things while we can't, so we sometimes have to defer to his perfect judgment and knowledge, and accept things we don't want. But in that, we gain strength, character and a much greater sense of why we're to stay humble and obedient. So no matter what the outcome specifically, it's always good for us in the end, whether we get what we specifically ask for, or whether He in his infinite knowledge, love and care for us, has to give us what we need instead of what we want. If that realization doesn't keep us humble and obedient, what could?

And we're just doing our due diligence. Just hope if I ever have to ask for help again, that guys like we have here will be able to render up for me. And it's entirely possible, too! We all have needs from time to time, and if we're lucky, and blessed with good and faithful friends, we again realize how appropriate humility and obedience really is, and how valuable and indispensible it really is. And how beautiful.

I could not stay away. Went down last evening to see what was going on.

She was in good spirits. A wound specialist came in who recommended a wound vac for the next few days. She set one up and I watched the entire process.

I spoke privately to her wonderful nurse. She forecast that the next couple of days will be the toughest pain wise.

The infection control doctor came by. She is pleased with the progress so far. We can expect to keep her on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks.

One day at a time sweet Jesus.

Chest X-ray last night shows that she has pneumonia. A PE is not totally ruled out going forward as she is a high risk.

They changed the antibiotics to cover the pneumonia.

My oncologist called yesterday. My PSA has taken a jump. They want to take new bone and CT scans to see what is going on.

I stopped at the hospital this morning. She was in good spirits and was breathing better. The new antibiotics take a long time to infuse.

Time for an update. The pneumonia quickly cleared up. The very sharp resident hospitalist following her case suspects a cardiovascular issue. This makes good sense to me as the condition he described would explain a lot of issues both before and after surgery.

Her pain is under control and she can go to the bathroom with minimal help. The physical therapist will check her out on stairs tomorrow morning and if everything continues to go well she comes home tomorrow afternoon!

I'm still pretty tired. I did sleep 12 hours last night. That helped immensely.

We'll need to follow up with our family doctor this week and get a referral to a cardiologist.

Continue to pray for healing of my wife and energy for me to keep up. We are doing ok financially, so I wish any help along those lines be directed to brother Hickok.

Thanks for your prayers. The Lord has sent a very talented young physician, Dr. Cook, across our path. Give thanks for that as well that Jane has turned the corner.

Jane's heart test went well! After leaving the hospital, she has lost 20# of water weight. The theory is that she had been overloaded with fluids while in the hospital. Combined with limited activity from the infection and surgery, she was unable to expel it.

The infection is clearing up, but she will remain on antibiotics for another 3 weeks.

She's walking better. We just went for a slow stroll around the block together.

Praise God that we have made it this far!

It has been a busy time for the family. Let me focus on Jane and I.

Jane continues to get better. We have a handle on the heart / water retention problem. The large wound is slow to heal. We are about at the point we were 9-10 weeks ago before the infection was diagnosed.

The new knee is frozen. It has been wrapped and immobilized since the last surgery since the deep infected wound has been the priority. We are hopeful that the wound will have healed to a point where she can have it manipulated under anesthesia and begin physical therapy.

Jane has run out of FMLA time from work. She has put a lot of worry into loosing her job, so we talk about God having that in his hands.

Me

My cancer has flared up again. I had bone and CT scans a couple weeks ago that confirmed the spread.

My Oncologist has recommended Taxotere chemotherapy. We start today. 6 cycles of 3 week duration. I guess I won't do a lot of shooting this summer.

We are both at peace with our present situation. Gods promises through his word comfort us. I pray that we be a good witness to our friends, family and church.

Amen

Ken, thanks for the followup. Cancer is a mean thing to wrestle with. But never let the doc's words be final with you. Chemo today is FAR beyond what it once was. It's no fun going through it, but it's become more effective over time. Several I know have recently had chemo take them from a dire diagnosis to apparently complete healing! So never give up. As Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over 'till it's over." I wish you and your wife well, and will continue prayers for you. Keep the faith, and enjoy your life each day. It's ironic, but we never really appreciate life until there's a threat it might end. Being human if full of paradox, isn't it?

You've got some awfully good and devout Christians beseeching the Master for you. Even science has proven that those who receive prayer recover better and quicker than those who don't, but they can't and don't even try to explain that in scientific terms. God bless you both, and heal your most pressing threats to your bodies.

I'm in the hospital now. Got here Saturday with dehydration and diverticulitis.
Too many visitors came even when told not too. Not comfortable. Wish they would text me and leave it at that.....

Anyway, I'm better now. In prayer time today I was reminded to be a loving example. Help teach and guide me Lord. Amen.

Ken, guys like you, with your attitude and faith, really provide US with a great example of what a Christian really is, and is supposed to be. Thank YOU, sir, for such a great example for the rest of us to follow when our times of troubles come. And they always seem to come, sooner or later. STill praying for you and Jane, brother.

I got home yesterday thank God. My dogs were ecstatic to see me.

I'm still pretty weak and need help. While reading Psalms in the hospital, it came to me that when a young man nears death, he cries out to his mother. When Christ neared death, he cried out to his Father.

Ken,
Thank God your home, the best place to be. Continued prayer for healing and strength, in Jesus name. Amen.
Perhaps one was looking backwards, Christ was looking forward.

Great to see you're home again, and I know it was great to see your dogs again. I think God gave us dogs so we could see what unconditional love really looks like. When we get home, they are SO excited to see us. They don't ask what we've done or who we were with. They're just glad to see us, and show it. Friends are also a great comfort when we have our down times. We probably don't really appreciate them enough until they come to see us when we're ailing, just to comfort us and be our friend. And here, a lot of awfully good guys are praying for you, too, and we'll continue 'till you're back in good health again. God bless and keep you.

Thank you my friends.

I'm a bit better today. Pray for wisdom whether or not to take my next chemo treatment on May 6th.

It's time for the next chemo treatment.

We have thought through what happened on the first round and have a game plan to ease the bad affects. Please pray that this works.

Jane returned to work half days last week. She was very well received by her coworkers and was able to get back into the routine by weeks end.

Her wound is still not completely healed up and she will remain on antibiotics for several months. The new knee motion is very limited. The wound must heal before she can have it manipulated under anesthesia and start physical therapy.

The Lord has carried us through these trials so we can still serve Him. His grace is our greatest prize. Nothing on earth can compare.

Father, Ken is due another round of chemo to fight his cancer. Please allow the chemical to work; allow him to avoid the side effects; and allow him to rest and heal. Take Ken by the hand and walk with him through this hard medical procedure. Father we need more and more men and women to spread Your word. Father hear my prayer! AMEN

Amen, Ken! Amen! Just said a prayer for you and the treatment, and that you will be healed, via the chemo or outright by His healing hand, and that your wife will be healed and returned to normalcy also.

I'm still alive. Jesus is too.

The second chemo cycle went slightly better, but I still landed in the hospital for 2 days with dehydration and an irregular heart beat. For the third cycle, they reduced the chemo dose 50%. Still rough, but I managed much better. At least I avoided the hospital. :-)

Janes wound has finally healed, praise God! She has started physical therapy. She is walking quite well. There is still work to do, but we are well on the road.

Both of us have had close calls with mortality this year. We are strong in our faith. I pray that you are too. If not, isn't it about time? Jesus is waiting for you with loving arms.
