I've been looking and cant find any good load data for 45ACP 230grn lead flat nosed rounds using Alliance Power Pistol. I'm sure there are better powders out there but does anyone have any reload data for Power pistol with 230 grn cast lead rounds.

I've found a recipe on hogdons load data website for using Hogdon Universal powder and according to the burn rate charts Power Pistol only burns slightly slower than universal. So is it a horrible idea to use the same load data for both? f anything the recipe would be slightly under loaded.

There is jacketed bullet data for the powder at the Alliant Powder site.

http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/powderlist.aspx?page=/reloaders/powderlist.aspx&type=1&powderid=8&cartridge=35

You'll not get into any trouble by beginning with the starting load for the 230 grain jacketed bullets with your cast boolits and then working up until you get to where you are happy with your load. You'll probably not want to exceed the max load listed although you'll probably get to its velocity with cast boolits with slightly less powder.

Echo. (and) PP is a wonderful powder for the .45. Very clean, very easy to meter, fairly economical. I run 7.0g with my 240g for a hard hitting load and 6.0 is a great 800ish for general plinking.

230 gr. is a pretty common weight for 45 ACP boolits. Two questions, what is the nomenclature of the 230 gr. boolit you are using; and, do you have a reloading manual?

I'm working up a bullseye load for 230gr lrn in my 1911 at the moment. will let you know after range test. using 4.0 - 5.0 gr.

Lyman 49 says 6.3 gr to 7.0 gr Power Pistol for 230 gr round nose.

Reloading without a book is like walking the high wire without a net! Sooner or later you'll make a mistake. You need to get a couple at least. I suggest the Lyman 49 and the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #3 or #4 as a minimum. Always double or triple check the books, too. I've found mistakes.

Speaking of manuals, the Lyman CBH #4 shows this Power Pistol data for the Lee (#2 Alloy) TL452-230-TC boolit:

Starting load: 6.1 grains for 829 fps
Max Load: 6.7 grains for 927 fps

The Lyman 452374 (my favorite in RCBS guise) of 225 grains:

Starting load: 6.3 grains for 764 fps
Max load: 7.0 grains for 865 fps

There seems to be a big difference in charges for boolits of 5 grains difference and that difference is counter intuitive. You'd think that the lighter Lyman projectile would be faster with the heavier charges listed, but it is significantly slower.

My favorite 45 ACP powder is 231, but I used up my last pound last week on a different loading project. I can't find any locally, so perhaps I'll look for a pound of PP to try.

Using either the H&G #34 or the RCBS 225 grain RN, I get good results with 4.0-4.1 grains of Red Dot. And a taper crimp of .471. Burns clean, easy recoil. no leading and decent grouping. Feeds well in the semi-auto. LLS

I have the lee modern reloading 2nd edition, there just wasn't a lot of information for cast lead 230gr. The nomenclature, 230gr cast trunicated cone with micro grooves.

Sounds like you may have the Lee TL452-230-TC. Did you cast them? As already mentioned above, the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition has specific data for that boolit. You would be doing yourself a favor to buy yourself a copy. Be safe, have fun.

Image taken from another members post. Mine drop heavy at about 238-239 grains lubed, I don't have the tumble lube version.

Thanks Bula! Looks like my load might be on the light side.

Update post range:

45acp 4gr bullseye 230gr LRN shot to point of aim with much reduced recoil from my bluedot load. Cycled the action in my 1911 fine. I probably won't bother going higher for the moment as this lets me use the same lee auto disk setting for 45 and 9mm ;).

Buy the books and you will answer all your own questions. Everybody should own at least the Lyman #4 Cast Bullet Handbook.

That book is the bible of what we all do. Just as necessary as a lead pot and molds.

Glad to help. That pic fixed my OAL issues as I was worried about pressure issues given my pill ran heavy.
