I just got my first dedicated lead slinger tonight. I had a Remington 700 in a tupperware stock that I traded in, plus a bit of cash for this beastly thing... It's been bubba'd hard, but it's the smoothest feeling rifle I've ever felt. I picked up a box of J-somthing-or-other ammo along with it, since I dont have a mold for 30cal yet, or dies for 30-06 for that matter. It's a 4-groove barrel with REALLY shiny bluing over the whole barreled action... About 95% intact. It already had scope bases on it, so I put the scope from the .223 on, it should work well (4-14x, illuminated mil-dot).

It sure looks like a shooter. It should put them in under 1" at 100 yards.

Assuming the action is well bedded, the bbl original and free floated, you
should have a real shooter there. I had a nice peep sighted sporterized
O3A3 that would shoot 1-1.5" at 100 with several j-bullet loads and the
peep sights. I gave it to my nephew and he loves it.

I don't know if the barrel is original or not. It has no front sight, and I dont know how easy it is to remove without leaving any evidence behind. How long are the barrels usually? Maybe the barrel has just been cut and re-crowned. It seems pretty rock solid, we'll see later today.

Angus... The original barrel was 24" long and you when you remove the front sight band, there will be quite obvious milling cut. Often these barrels are cut and crowned to 22" just behind the band. That will leave all or part of the arsenal and date mark on top of the barrel.

with that blueing its probably been polished, re-crowned...etc but could be still the original.

There is a a 3 that looks like it has been worn down quite a bit with polish. It measures out at 21 3/4" barrel length. I shot a few j-bullets today, got three rounds to touch at 50ish yards once I got the scope sighted. Cant wait to get my dies and a mold...

Angus..Get yourself a Timney Trigger (single stage, Midway or Cabellas) and a milled trigger guard (found on EBay) and you will be set. Free float the barrel for best results. Lyman 311284 powered by 23gr 4227 will give you 2 in groups at 100 yds for a starter. Hornady 150 spire points powered by 35 gr of 4895 is moderate and a good tight shooting hunting load. You will need to go to lower rings and a bit smaller scope to make it usable in the woods. Doesn't look like you have enuf eye releaf in that tube for ball ammo. Could be hard on the facial bone structure. Looks like a Bishop stock so should be a good one.
I have two sporterized A3s and an 03 and they are my favorite guns. 30-06 forever..!!Enjoy..!!

I shot Remington 150gr SPs today without any eye relief concerns. The rings seem to fit perfectly for a good cheek weld. It is in fact a Bishop stock. I sanded it down and re-oiled it and topcoated it with some paste wax. I've never has a problem with 4x in the woods, I'll stick with what I have until I have a problem. Also, the trigger is really crispy already, no need to fix what isn't broken...
