Hello everyone,
Have a question in regards to proper size of gas checks.
I' have a LEE 170 grain .309 diam bullet that I want to attach a gas check to. Vulcan Gas checks shows that the shank for their checks is 0.2795" inside diam. and the outside diam is .0310". The thickness of the check is .0145 "
Since I am loading a .309 diam. bullet, will that size of gas check be correct for my bullet ?
Thanks in advance for any help.158326

Hi, the gas check will be sized to 0.309" when you run the bullet through your sizer die.

If the actual shank on the bullet is .2795" you might be a little under size.

.2795" + .0145" + .0145" = .3085" You might find these not quite sized all the way around. I'd consider .016 thick gas checks for this application unless your bullet shank is something other than the gas check's ID of .2795".

The check crimps on the reduced diameter heel of the bullet and the dimensions of the heel of the bullet are what is needed. Some heels are cylindrical and others tapered.
