I have great success with my Springfield 03 and Model 1917 both shooting the Lyman 311291 173gr bullet with both 2400 and 5744.

What I am asking here, is that I sold off my 6.5-284 and now have 3 lbs of H4831 I can no longer use. I was wondering if anyone has tried the H4831 and the 173gr cast bullet with decent results in 30-06 military rifles. I just want to plink at plates out to 200 yards.

I have used IMR 4831 with 311291 and 311284 in my 1917s with success. However you must not use reduced loads. I used 41-42 grains and got decent grouping although the bore was kind of dirty. You can find discussion/table of this in the NRA Reloading Handbook in an article/series of articles on cast bullet performance in the 30-06 done by Col. E.H. Harrison. LLS

the NRA Reloading Handbook in an article/series of articles on cast bullet performance in the 30-06 done by Col. E.H. Harrison.

Good advice. This tome, while somewhat dated (1969 with several printings and revisions), has a plethora of info on all aspects of reloading and casting for rifles and pistols.

I've got way too much 4831 in the magazine, so perhaps this is a way to burn some of it up. I also have a couple hundred 311141 boolits cast, sized and lubed so this thread has been a good kick in the rear to get started with just this very subject.

Heck I might just shoot the 4831 loads in my US 1917 Ought-Six too.

Should I use a filler or am I good to go? I am going to use Winchester large rifle primers

Where or what is Dacron ? Can I use something I have around the house?

Dacron is used as pillow or quilt stuffing. It's sold in bags at fabric and craft stores.

I guess I will have to go buy some filler. How do you measure the filler to make sure each case has the same amount?

I have used 46gr behind a 190gr cast boolit, and to be frank, all I did was make a mess out of my Garand. The unburnt little yellow cores were all through the action! I had to stop and clean the chamber after each string to keep it running. And, those 46gr were fired with a Federal GM215M primer, supposedly the hottest. By all means work up, but I think you'll find you need to get up a bit higher than what others are saying. H and IMR aren't quite the same. Next time out with the Garand, I'll be trying 49gr of H4831. A filler might help the H burn better, but having ringed a Krag chamber, I'm a little leery of them.

I used standard primers (Winchester large rifle), hope I will be ok

Should be fine Sixpointfive. Once you find your best load with the Winchesters, you can try another brand for fun.
