I've got a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington from the 1970's I've recently acquired, I've always been a fan of the cartridge but 35 Remington is getting very hard to even get brass to reload for and I really don't see that changing ever again.

I've been in correspondence with a reputable gunsmith for this kind of work to have the rifle converted to what's essentially a rimless 356 Winchester, basically a light loaded 358. I'm not looking to ever buy any factory ammo but having a source of essentially free brass forever is appealing and a modest boost in performance would be icing on the cake. I would expect some accuracy improvement with the superior geometry of a 308 based case as well.

My deciding factor on this may come down to getting any firsthand reports from you guys who may have had such conversions performed as to how the rifle functions and shoots.

I keep thinking RP will make another run of component brass but I also invested $20 in the Powerball last night. Funny thing, one of the first Remlins I saw was in 35 Rem about the time component brass was discontinued. I'm a fan of the 35 Rem (at least until I run out of brass) but this conversion sounds good if the price is reasonable.

If you can get a 30-30 bolt, you can do that I would suspect and just rechamber. Use 356 brass or 358 brass lightly loaded. My converted 30-30 will eject 358 brass just fine.

Hornady brass in .35 Rem showed up at the Sportsman Warehouse in Cheyenne, probably showing up other places.

Didn't think 356 brass was all that easy to get either. I have built up my 35 brass supply just shooting factory. So far Hornady has been supplying loaded cartridges,

356 brass is not easy to come by, but its out there. Bought some about two weeks ago. IIRC $35 bag.

IIRC, Hornady brass is shorter than (say) Remington, Federal or whatever brand, because it's a byproduct of the Hornady LeverEvolution loads.

You don't need 356 brass. You just need 308 brass. The rim is totally unnecessary

Grumpa sells converted 35 Remington brass. I can attest to them working perfectly and being high quality. I had JES convert a 30/30 Marlin to 356 for me. I hope this is who you planned on using for the rebore. My Marlin feeds converted 308 brass fine.

I built one just like you are contemplating. Had a 336 in 35 Rem, and the chamber had a bad gouge in it from the factory. Rechambered it to 358, but held the headspace .030" short and left the neck full length. Cut off a set of dies to match, this way nobody will ever fire factory loaded .358 win in it. Had to open the bolt face just a touch, otherwise no changes. It works great, way more accurate than before and the fired cases eject now instead of sticking into the gouge in the chamber. I load it just a touch faster than 35 Rem, running at the same pressure. It's held together so far for about 500 rounds.

I had JES punch out a 30-30 to 356Win, MUCH easier than going with the 35 Rem conversion, I've got plenty of 356 Win brass so I never tried using 308 brass?

The Hornady 35 Remington brass is standard, it's NOT short like the other "LeveRevolution" brass, and it's be quite available lately, I've seen it on the shelf at three Sportsman's Warehouses recently.

My converted 307 n win 94 356 will run fine on 308 brass, but i scored a bunch of 356 brass n local shop has a lot of 356 n 38/55 ammo so i can supplement my brass supply here n there

Thank you. I really like Hornady brass, have personally pestered Hornady folks about making brass for this cartridge. Will pursue this immediately.

There is some new 35 Rem brass over on Graybeard now. I don't think I would convert a 35 Rem to 356, but I am having it done to a Marlin 30AS 30 30. You should be able to find 35 Rem ammo and brass at any fairly large gun show .

He isn't converting it to 356. He is converting it to a 358 with reduced loads. The 35 remember bolt face will match up better with the rimless 358 and get better extraction and throw than the 30-30 bolt will. In all honesty in will handle the mistake of loading factory 358 win rounds. You may or may not get sticky extraction but the gun will NOT blow up. If this is what you want to do to get around not having the brass go for it.

356 and 358 Winchester are for all intensive purposes the same round. The difference is the semi-rimmed case. I don't load to full power as there is no need to w/ cast. But I've had no issues w/ my converted 30/30.

As said I've seen it on the shelves at three Sportsman's Warehouse here in Oregon, the Albany, Salem and Bend store all had it, it IS out there!

Go back to thehighroad and reread my post again. Glad you found your way over here Dale!
I'm still loading .35brass I picked up and started loading in the '80's. You won't need that much unless you load the REALLY hot. When you experience sticky extraction, you're too hot already.
The beauty of the .35 is it REALLY kills with only modest loads.
I didn't sweat the '07-08 debacle, except for the loss of the Remington 200 grin .358" RN Corlokts. Replaced them with cast from the RCBS 200grn RFN-GC (220grn!) Not even looking back.

I've been watching both locations intently. I am in fact subscribed to this one.

I should mention here like I did in the other thread that I've decided to sideline this project in favor of a retro ar build in a car bullet chambering.

I also concur. 35 brass lasts forever unless you get some gun show special cases that some yahoo used brasso on.

The LGS has Remington ammunition in stock for $31 a box. I will probably just snag a couple and unload those to supplement my modest supply when I go to pick up my cav15 lower.
