Arrived just in time for Christmas! 1914 vintage Colt Frontier Six Shooter .44-40 (Single Action Army). Well worn but even patina overall, matching numbers, original grips, decent bore, action and lock-up are tight and all functions are correct.

Typical of these early Colts, the groove diameter is pretty tight at a hair over .426". First loading effort will be some .427" 200-RNF at powder puff levels. No sense in straining these old timers with hot loads.

Fun stuff!

These vintage sixguns are a hoot to shoot. I would suspect that with the condition of the bore, a soft bullets (40-1) at black powder velocities will provide your best accuracy.

Nice piece! Matt's Bullets has appropriate 200-215 grainers for this if you don't yet cast your own.

But when you get ready to cast, Accurate Molds has several designs for the .44-40 which have the correct nose shape and adequate lube capacity for black powder, if you choose to go that route. Otherwise about 7.0 to 7.5 grains of Unique will shoot well and go easy on the old girl. John Kort's 43-215C is well proven and Matt's is the only commercial caster I know who can provide shooting quantities of that bullet ready to load.

I'm not a big Colt fan but that is a cool old six gun.

I've enjoyed the 44-40 WCF for about 15 years, first in an original Winchester 1873 carbine I inherited and as of 2013 in one of those "imitations and patent infringements" Sam Colt warned everyone about.......a Uberti repro of the FSS x 4-3/4". The Uberti is a tick tighter than the Winchester, about .4280"-.4285" in the grooves and a couple tenths larger in all the throats. .429" sizing works in both just fine. The usual bullet is SAECO #446, which has generous lube capacity. Starline cases are so much better than the usual run of W-W or R-P brass that my next firing of those two makes will be its last--it is outta here. It only stayed around this long due to the scarcity of brass in all calibers brought on by ObamaNation nonsense.

I agree wholeheartedly on the Starline cases. Been using them in the 111 year old Marlin 1894 and will use them in the 102 year old Colt. Excellent product.
