I've noticed the blackhawk likes heavier cast boolets, but I was wanting to load 200 gr SWC from the Lee mold #452-200 with ACCURATE #5, wondering if anyone has done it?

I've done that powder with the Lee #452-228 with 10grns and its not as accurate as factory loads.
Could the 200grn be more accurate or should I go with a different load or mold?

Mold suggestions?

Edit: oh and herders pockets are suuuuper much tighter, y'all do anything special to them?

I'm assuming you're talking about a .45 Colt Blackhawk. I have three of them, with one of them being a combination .45 Colt/.45 acp. In the combination revolver, the 200 gr. SWC bullet fired in the .45 acp cylinder will put 5 shots into 1.5" at 35 yards from a rest. The .45 Colt cylinder shoots the same bullets to about 2.5" at the same distance. I load mine with either Bullseye or Winchester 231 in the .45 acp, and TrailBoss in the .45 Colt.

In answer to your question about accuracy, in my Blackhawks, the 200 gr. bullet is very accurate.

Hope this helps.

I own several of the Ruger OM 45 convertibles. On my shooters,,, I've reamed the chambers to a uniform 0.4525. As such,,, I enjoy good accuracy over a fair range of bullets & loads. HOWEVER,,,, each gun is different, and each chamber is different. The ONLY way to determine what kind of accuracy you will get is to experiment with your gun & your choices.
Experimentation is half the fun of casting, loading & shooting.

ive got a 4 5/8 barrel Blackhawk convertible in 45lc/45 acp I cant speak for aa#5 powder but I shoot a 200 gr swc bullet from a lee mold and it is pretty accurate for me at 25 yrds off a bench . I usually use imr 4756 ,ive also loaded it over unique and win 231 with good results. now with the 45 acp cylinder it seems to like a 230 lrn bullet better over bullseye powder

This. I would add I get excellent accuracy using the 200 gr LSWC in 45Colt cases. I have the Ruger 45acp/45Colt conversion. I shoot mostly 45acp in the gun only because I have a ton of 45acp brass but not so much in 45Colt.

The Ruger .45 has a 1 in 16" twist and should work very well with a light boolit shot slow. Don't push them and you might do well. As you go up in velocity, go up with boolit weight.

I shoot the Lee 452-228-2R in my Blackhawk…

I like 8.0 grains of Unique for ~728 fps & 6.5 grains of TiteGroup for ~823 fps…
(I tried to “hotrod” them a bit more, but accuracy was always best between or at the velocities shown)

Not sure which is the most accurate but both impact approximately -0.7” at 25 yards and around -4” low at 50 yards…

I didn’t adjust sights as they are set for the 45-270-SSA with a heavy duty load—I don’t shoot it much anymore…

I use the similar Lee design boolits in my 357’s and 44’s. All shoot well with fast burning powders. Fun to shoot too…

Good-luck…BCB

I use a couple of different 200gr LSWC (TL 452-200 SWC) and RNFP (452-200 rf) in my 45lc Blackhawk with pretty good target results. Loaded over Promo they save powder and lead for target use.

BTW: Lee has the 452-200 RF with shallow lube grooves on closeout for $13.50 http://leeprecision.com/new-mold-dc-452-200-rf-shallow-lube-groove.html

Finally got to shoot the 45 LC Blackhawk, 230 LRN 10.2 grn of aa#5 and the 200 grn SWC with 10.5 AA#5. Shot AMAZING thanks for all the help had zero leading and seemed more accurate then the heavier factory loads, thanks for all the help guys!

Ever thought about trying even lighter bullets? 185 or 165?

I did when I was looking 45 LC loads, I have all Lee molds as of now. I want to start using other molds, any suggestions?
