I have been given 150 Norma 6mmBR cases and have attempted to form them into 30 BR. I annealed the cases before using the K&M step up expander tool. After running the expander into the cases, I am getting a bulge just above the neck that I cannot seem to get out. The bulge is such that the cases will not chamber.

Help. Don't want to "spoil" the cases, but need them to be 30BR.

Do you have a 30 BR FL die? If so use it.
That bulge is common when you only expand the brass and do not resize the neck.

Could you just blow them out to 30 with a powder charge and filler and no bullet. Do the cases chamber and headspace properly or will the extractor hold the case for fireforming.

Is the bulge thicker brass, if so you will need to neck turn the brass. Actually depending on your chamber and bullet diameter you might need to neck turn anyway.

If you size that brass you will get a donut and need to inside ream as well.

Yes neck turning is the answer

Generally you do not get a doughnut unless you move down in size, he is moving up.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I have a Whidden FL die with neck collets. The die will not size the neck all the way to the shoulder. And yes, I can see the bulge looking inside the case just before the shoulder.

I have taken the neck collet and pressed it down on the bulge using a 223 die to bump the collet against and this helped some, but a slight bulge is there. My gun is currently being barreled on 30 BR so I cannot try the cases yet.

In this case it seems some of the parent case shoulder is moving up into the neck.

Here is an article about necking up 6mm BR to 30 BR.

Well there you go, that and the embedded links that's a pretty complete story. My cases are made from 300 Savage brass but the issues are pretty much the same.

I shot a .30 BR for years in IHMSA and always just used .308 cases.
I have the dies and haven't used them in years. You might have
better luck forming them in a regular full length sizing die.
