I'm looking for a good red dot sight to mount on an S&W Model 66. It's a -7 so it's already drilled & tapped.

Requirements:
Under $300
Prefer reflex but tube is ok.
Dot no more than 4 MOA, preferably a bit smaller. This will be used for NRA hunter pistol silhouette, which is out to 100m.

Please no comments about how optical sights don't belong on handguns or that I need vision correction. The question is which sight, not whether I should use one.

Thanks!

Knowing the target size would help, 4 MOA is going to cover a lot of target. Yes I know 4 MOA will cover 4" at 100,
but what it is and what you see is a little different.

Get a Burris FastFire3. You can get it with a three moa dot. I have used them on guns as powerful as my 45-70 and 44mag with no failures at all. I can also shoot consistent groups - five shots- under 1.7" with my lever gun at 114 yds, repeatedly. I shot handgun competition for years and did very, very well at it using a lot of different dot sights over the last twenty-five years. I probably owned twenty or more sights during that time. I'd give two thumbs up to the Burris FF3 and the UltraDot tube sight. Either one will fit into your monetary guideline.

Like some of the others have said the Fast Fire III is very good. I have one on a Marlin 94 44 mag. I think the UltraDot Matchdot II is even a lot better. I have one on my S&W 686 and it is great on steel plates or one hand target shooting. This is the one I have.......Terry

The targets aren't geometric shapes so I'll give the approximate smaller of length/width and the distance in meters:
Chicken: 6", 40
Pig; 7.5", 50
Turkey: 9.5", 75
Ram: 13.5", 100.

Shouldn't a 4 MOA dot cover like this?
1.6" at 40
2" at 50
3" at 75
4" at 100.

Which means the dot should cover no more than 1/3 of any of the targets.

Or am I totally missing something?

Smaller than 4 would be great.

The Cmore slide rides were built to survive direct mounting to a semi auto slide.

Yeah I've been leaning towards the FF, but want to look at more options.

Even if a 4moa dot covers 4" at a hundred yards, that doesn't mean you can't shoot small groups with it. I'm getting 1.7" or less groups (five shots) at a measured 114 yards using a 3moa dot. You can put the center of the dot over the center of what you're aiming at and it will be very precise. You can see through these dots, they don't obscure the target. You only turn the up bright enough to see in the ambient light conditions. I was shooting team challenge matches with a handgun and opening the circular steel gates at forty-five and fifty yards with a three minute dot and the gates were 3". I usually could run them all in the allotted time period. Don't get too hung up on dot size. It matters when the dot is WAY too big, but a 3moa or 4moa isn't all that big.

Burris Fast Fire on an Allchin mini STS mount. Can't get better or lower.

Depends on how far sight is from your eye.... mounted arms length on a hand gun, is a whole lot different than on a carbine receiver. Try holding any unmounted red dot sight on 100 yard target and vary the distance from your eye....you'll be in for a rude awakening. I always opt for the smallest dot size...2 MOA is the largest and 1 MOA, would be preferred.

Just a little food for thought. The Leupold deltapoint is 7.5 moa, however, if you use the very tip of the delta as your aiming point, it's about like having a 1/4 or 1/2 moa dot. The only downsize, in my opinion, is the cost factor.

A 4moa ultra dot can be used at longer ranges. There is a ton of adjustment in them. Some say they have to hold way over at long range...not sure what that's about. I can just shade the top of a 500M target and get regular hits. The 4moa ultradot is the best value sight I've ever used....not as good as good 8x scope for group shooting but more practical.

Take a look at the c-mor STS . I have two of them 3 min. and very user friendly. one is on a fusion 45 1911 and one is going on a Bay Side custom 1911 10mm. Leupold delta point is a good sight but hard to adjust ( its coming off the 10mm). I also have a ultra dot on a bfr 500 jrh its a very strong/good sight . tks KEN

I have an ultradot on my S&W 500. I was skeptical at first. I have put around 700 rounds with absolutely no problems. Great red dot.

I have a Burris Fastfire II on my 44 mag and like it also.

I would recommend both.

i've shot pistols and revolvers with a few different red dots and i keep coming back to the burris ff3 (imho, better than the ff2 because the sight doesn't need removal to change the battery). small, 3moa, variable brightness, robust build, takes a lickin and keeps on tickin, and super light at 2oz. well worth its 250 price tag. i'll probably get another for the gp-100, along with a no-tap weigand rail.

i'll add - i suck at handgun accuracy, and sticking on a red dot (ff3) to my .22 auto has improved my shooting about 400%. really. now instead of sucking i'm just about a decent pistol shooter.

This is great info. I have been looking at these for a couple years and could never decide which to get. FF 3 it is. Thanks!!

The Ultradot Matchdot has 4 different dot sizes with just a spin of one knob and a different knob to adjust brightness. For bullseye shooting the adjustable brightness is my choice over the auto adjusting of the FF. I have FF, FFII, and FFIII's on different guns. Being able to change dot sizes in a second or two is a great benefit of the Matchdot.

the burris ff3 has 3 brightness adjustment levels. you can easily tape off the sensor. i found it much better than the ultra-dot. ymmv.
