I stored a pistol barrel from my ruger 22/45 in a well oil silicon rag (down south ) but to my surprise a 1/2 rust spot on the barrel that left the bluing finish speckled .
I hate to send out the barrel action to be re-blued any ideas on a touch up to help the appearance it did piss me off.

Brownell's Oxpho blue works really well with no major after rust like Berchwood Casey Permablue. Smells better too, you can pick up something with Permablue on it and your hands will stink.

I've used the oxpho blue cream on several occasions and it's a great product. Follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.

While I generally use Oxpho Blue for touch up jobs and am satisfied with it, another cold blue product that works well, but costs more and not as easy to use, is the BLUE WONDER product. I'd expect a better over-all even finish with the Blue Wonder if I had a rifle barrel to cold blue. For example, had a gunsmith install a chrome molly heavy barrel on a ruger 77 tang safety action. I used the Blue Wonder to do the barrel. I would stop by his home on way home from shooting the rifle for first time about a week later to show him the finished rifle. It was a bright sunny day and he was in his yard when I handed him the rifle to look at. He focuses on the Blue Wonder barrel and has a quizzical look on his face. He asks me, was this barrel already blued when I installed it? I chuckled because he is on the elderly side and told him, don't worry about your memory.....that I used Blue Wonder on it, (a product I've seen in his workshop). He smiled, nodded his head saying, "good stuff Blue Wonder." But then, I've had some rifle barrels that looked good with Oxpho. Recall a barrel done by another gunsmith with Oxpho, who must have dipped the barrel in a tank of Oxpho. Super super nice looking it was, and the gun store owner who had the barrel done, showing it to me, was very impressed by its finish too.

question when using let say 000 steel wool ?
how do you de-grease steel wool pads

It's not nnecessary with the Oxpho blue, it doesn't even require that the part be completely degreased, per the instructions. Slight heating of the part helps to open up the pores and seems to help it color the metal.
