I have the lyman mold but not the sizer. I hand lube with SPG for my roller.

I have a M71/84 (43) Mauser, Lyman 347 gr mould, sizing die and top punch and I lube with normal lub sizer. I enjoy shooting witrh this old one.
Buckshot,
I like yours with all this shiny metal. Mine was painted black. I guess I could remove it too. What bullet are you shooting with it and what powder are you using if I may ask ?

..............danyboy, welcome to the board. It's a mess but comfortable and you'll get used to it :D.

The one in the picture is a model 1871. I have a M1884 too but it has been sporterized (not by me) and I got it quite awile after that picture was taken. The 1871 originally had a .433" bore and a .451" groove. When they came out with the 1884 they also took a .005" groove reduction to .446".

In the M71 I've used regular 45 caliber rifle boolits from the Lyman 292gr up to the Lyman 457121 @ 475grs. That's the Loverin looking FNPB they make for the Whitworth and Volunteer muzzle loaders. Powders have been from Unique to surplus WC852.

For the repeater I've used the Lyman 446110 @ 340grs and their 458124 @ 385grs. This last one is a BP tupe boolit with big deep lube grooves and it sizes to .446" well. Also the 370gr RCBS 43-370. The powders I've used pretty much have been the same as for the single shot M71.

If you want specific loads I can list some that have worked real good. One of hte best was surplus 4895 which is just a bit slower then IMR4895.

Buckshot,
My m71/84 slugs to .448 of groove dia. and .433 bore. I was using too hard an alloy to start with and accuracy wasn't good. I just use wheeweights now without the heat treatment and they seem to obturate better.
I went with what FC Barnes suggested in one of his experiments with this rifle and used 30gr of imr4198. I also use 14 gr of Unique once in a while.
So you use 4895 ? In what way is the surplus one different with the IMR one ? Do you have any recipes for the 340 gr .446 bullet ?

..............Surplus (my batch) is a bit slower then IMR or H4895. Maybe 100 fps or so, load for load. Still good stuff! I have some surplus IMR4198 that's ALMOST as slow as canister 4895! Definately slower then 3031.

The 446110:

SR4759, 20.0grs 1232 fps. 24.0grs 1322 fps
Surp 4895, 37.0grs 1223 (use 35.0 IMR or H)
5744, 27.0grs 1288 fps
SR7625, 16.0grs 1200 fps.

You can actually use data from the 45-70 listed as suitable for the Trapdoor with a like, or heavier slug listed for it's data. Reduce the charge 5% to start.

With today's primers and these old rifles, if you're getting flat primers you're already well beyond where you should be. At least using WW primers, of which I'm most familiar. A bit of flattening right around the firing pin indent I consider okay, but if it spreads much from there then your getting up above 32K, and there isn't any reason to go beyond that.

Hello everyone, I also have a couple of 71/84s. I Have been shooting cast bullets from a lyman #446110 mod, which I bought the bullets already cast and sized. I am using .45/90 Starline brass reformed to .43 Mauser, and have used 75 grs of American Pioneer Powder FFG, and some times 12 grs of unique, with good results. I am thinking about buying the mold and casting this bullet myself, I have some lead and I have casted in the past for ML rifles. Can I shoot these as cast? Thanks for your help.

I shoot that same boolit lubed by hand, no sizing.

I have used SPG, Carnuba Red, and LBT Blue Soft. All worked well with smokeless.

My 71/84 needs a .450 boolit so I asked Tom at Accurate to cut me a .499 and it drops ( depending on alloy) a nice .450 - 385 gr, sized with a Lyman .450 H&I and lubed with CR shoots great ,,, for it's years,,

I've got an M71/84 Mauser and the Lyman luber.

Mine slugged out at .448 and I use .452 lead bullets for the 45 ACP. When down on those, I'll swage lead 452 bullets and coat them. Easier than casting, and better results, IMNSHO. More expensive tooling though.
