i just want to say thank you for bringing cast boolits to me. i've been reloading jacketed bullets for over 20 years, i've never thought cast boolits would make a difference. boy was i wrong:oops:!!! although i use commercial boolits right now, i will go to making cast boolits on my own. again, thank you!!!

i've seen on the web what everyone would want( like say a win 1885 high wall in 38-55:p), but what you can have. i happen to be on disablity because of a stroke(right arm/leg and speech are at 25-30%) and the only thing i want(:takinWiz:reality s#$@s) is a good encore barrel although i will take the win 1885 off of your hands for free!!!:veryconfu

i am going to use a tc encore with a 38-55 heavy factory MGM barrel(1 in 12" twist) around 25". i plan on using a peep sight(williams or skinner). i am going to be able to hunt deer/ possibly black bear at around 125-150 yards. also i plan on shooting a few targets (for fun) out to 300 yards away. i'm really interested in black/smokeless powder single shots and lever actions.

i already have a 30-30(mod 94), 30-40 krag('98 spr armory), 444 marlin(encore) and a 45-70(handi-rifle). all of which are cast boolits shooters:smile:. i have thought about buying a encore barrel in the 35 rem or 405 win, but i do have a my heart set on the 38-55.

I've never owned a 38-55 either. I've wanted one for some time. Seems like when I find one I'm broke which is most of the time.
Im having fond thoughts of just buying a 30-30 and have Jess bore it.
Ideally I would like an 1887 of some flavor in 38-55 with aperture sights.

Suggestion for you with that Encore barrel. I too have wanted a 38-55 for a few years but never quite felt affluent enough to shop around. On the other hand, I have an old TCR with a 338 WM barrel and with Lee 220 gr RNGC it feels much the same. Soon I hope to get that Accurate 270 gr. mold and the rifle will be even more similar to the 38-55.. You might shop around for a 338 WM barrel for an Encore. The only issue with the comparison, at least with the TCR barrel is that it won't stabilize the 220's at MV's less than 1650 fps.

As you probably know a 375 Winchester barrel will do anything a 38-55 barrel will do, could be different twist rates. 375 might be easier to find. I have leverguns in both cartridges, all are among my favorites.

wolfer,
i know what you mean about being broke!!! it will take me most of this year just to get a barrel!!!!

quilbilly,
i can't afford to say aflanet!!!:veryconfu see i told ya!!!!;) it would be a nice find, 338wm, but i'm really not into magnums. i don't even have a magnum!!! not even a 22 mag!!!

txgunnut,
you know i was looking into a 375 win in tc encore. it almost got ahead in my poll, but the 38-55 is hard for me to own a gun that that comes from the 1870's than one that comes from the 1970's. i know the 375 win does hit harder and shoots flatter than the little old 38-55.:bigsmyl2: but i just want it[smilie=b:;-)!!!

38-55 is one sweet old round, 375W.....not so much. My BB may be headed for Cody, lol. One 38-55 is pretty much eye candy and the other is headed off for restoration, both keepers. My point is that just because the barrel is marked 375W doesn't mean that you can't shoot 38-55 loads in it.
