For 9mm plinking bullets that you intend to powder coat do you recommend a plain base or gas check mold?

Thanks

If just for plinking, plain base.

PB..........it wouldn't matter if powder coated or not.

There must be a 9mm GC boolit somewhere , but I can't think of a single one.
I am sure somebody here can post one. But I would still use a plain base.

Why do you think you need a GC on a simple 9mm slug? Especially plinking loads??????Velocities are low and gas cutting should not normally be a problem. I have never seen a GC's 9mm mold. I shoot TONS of them with just PC with absolutely ZERO problems.

You can find .358-360 molds that have GC's but they are up in the 158gn and higher range......not conducive to 9's! Most people shoot .358 sized boolits in their 9's for much better accuracy. I sure do!

Years ago I had a mold for .358 for my .38/.357 that was a 125gr GC that I sized to .356 for the 9mm.
The GC gained me nothing.
Never used the mold all that much, so i sold it when I moved here over 20 Years ago.

This was my thinking also. ^^^^^^^^^

But if my experience with the 500 Smith and Wesson is any indicator I would say either one will work.

I really don't see any problems with pushing a hard cast boolit (high teens bhn) to top end 9mm pressure with PC or lube for that matter weather it is PB or GC design. Without the check of course.

I have a couple (two identical molds), of RCBS 9mm-121-RN-GC bullet molds that I purchased specifically for "warm" high velocity loads for my circa 70's .38 Super Colt Combat Commander. I was doing some experiments at the time and did not want to be distracted with any chance of leading. So, I got the gas check version of the mold. From what I gather, RCBS no longer lists that mold.

Now that I am experimenting with powder coating in that .38 Super and already have the molds, I am continuing to use it in the .38 Super.
