well folks my smith model 625 JM came in today. LOL well............ looks pretty good... but dont look to hard. man the finish sucks on the barell, it looks pitted. ill get a pic up later.

the wood JM grips... man i got better lookin wood on a old notty pine in the back 40. my wife even said man those are ugly grips.

found a metal burr on the thing between the cyl and the barell. yanked it off but holy cow. also when you open the cylinder and look down the barell thru the CYL opening, theres a sharp edge i cut my finger. looks like im going to need to brake out the emory cloth.

front sight looks good a long with the rear.

now the cylinder... lol i was under the impression the holes were chamfered. the ejector thing is but not the holes.

moon clips work ok but started to have a round get hung up every now and then. hope it gets better. ill be pissed off if it happens in a match.

the JM on the gun and grips are kinda ghetto. they could came up with something better. o well i guess jerry said looks good so wheres my check.....

the action job..... well that sucks its like a 20 pound pull if i had to guess. i can shoot it well single action but double i yank them 3 inches to the right.

now the famous JM trigger.... *** someone needs to give him a swift kick in the giblets. the serrations are so sharp its already wore the hide off my finger. going to have to get out a belt sander to tame them down.

i guess with a wolf spring kit and a action job along with a polisher with a gallon of jewelers rouge and a new barell i guess itd be OK but..................... cant believe my barell with pits made it pass quality controll. not very happy. ill get picks up later.

any tips or ideas post up. going to run it in my first IPSC revolver match tommorow. -chris

Send it back for another one. I've seen a couple of 625s at the range recently and they didn't look bad and the one I shot did well.

I have two 625-8's (JM Specials) and they are two of the best revolvers I have ever owned (and I have a *hit pile of S&W's in the safe). They are EXTREMELY accurate (well under an inch at 25 yards). Both actions were quite decent. However, on the first one, I did a mild action job including replacing the springs with a set from Jerry. The action, which was not at all bad, smoothed up quite nicely.

It sounds to me like you may have gotten a "Monday" gun. I sure am happy with mine.

im not that fussy with my guns as alot of people. I consider even my customs as just a tool. but i think if i got a smith with that much pitting on it id be boxing it up and sending it back.

I don't have one myself but good a friend just got one a while back and has been very unhappy with it untill he got the cyl chamfered, forcing cone recut and polished , cyl polished , new springs, I looked at the day he got it at the range and said hand me some ammo to take my turn at it . Then he said he hadn't fired it yet himself I called BS because it looked like it had shot 50 times, or more it was filthy from the factory. I don't know if this is isolated or not to the JM models because I have never had a S&W with any problems. James:(

That pitting isn't what I'd expect from a Smiff. I wouldn't even expect that from a Taurus! Of course I'd prefer a blued gun to start with.

I always hear how beautiful Smiths are compared to Rugers. If this is the best S&W can do, I will stick to my "rough" Rugers.

I would say to Smith; The workmanship is disappointing. Please try again.

That's suppose to be a top of the line piece?

That pitting is atrocious.

And all that work still need to be done to it?

I'd send it back and ask for a refund.

I wonder if S&W will say "it's within spec" again.....

What the hell is that under the hammer spur in your photo - the thing that looks like the shifter on a suicide clutch harley - is that the cylinder release?

Good gosh almightly - I need to order one of those for a tomato stake this year. What in the crap was JM thinkin'?

Maybe I'm just jumping the gun, as usual, you gun isn't a 2 speed by chance, is it?

They haven't gone to sand casting those things, have they?

Well, at least it runs good.

That pitting sure does look like sand casting, all right. Very sorry to see and hear this.

Colbyjack;
It was a beautiful day today and I took my 625-8 (JM Special) to the range today. I took particular attention to really LOOK at the revolver. I had no "custom" pitting anywhere on my revolver (I believe that I would talk to Smith about the pitting - shouldn't be).
I was shooting well today (at least for me) and will show my best target.

I was using the Saeco #68 cast bullet ahead of 4.1 of Red Dot with a Federal 150 primer in mixed cases.

I averaged 98 on the timed fire target at 25 yards shooting slow fire (I shot six targets). Considering that I had serious eye surgery last year this was a GOOD day.

We have had such lousy weather that it was a real treat to see some sunshine and 70's temperatures. LIFE IS GOOD!! Can you tell that I am happy?

obxpilgrim;
That cylinder release is an after market item. It did NOT come on the 625-8 JM Special.

If it's a collector or doesn't shoot, call Smith. I hate new handguns. And I hate pretty guns in general. The natural reaction is to baby them. I do baby them until I decide if it's a keeper so I can sell it if it ain't. Cause once you start shootin and holsterin it, ain't long before it has flaws anyway.

If you have one that is imperfect, then you bypass that protective stage and move directly to fun.

Seriously, I'd make a detailed list of all problems noted, remove any aftermarket parts, & send it back for a warranty fix. Request round trip shipping on their dime - if they do not offer it in the first place.

If the JM is a Performance Center gun, speak to someone in the PC before sending it in, & reference their name in your cover letter.

If you are having accuracy issues, be sure to tell them what type of premium factory ammo you have "tested" the gun with. Any reference to "hand-loads" will bring insinuations of "rookie user induced problems". Don't ask me how I know...

Not following up on these issues is doing youself a dis-service. Holding their feet to the fire till they get it right, will help S&W as a company - in the long run.

Just my $0.02

I know it didn't come on it - just givin' you a hard time. Looks like it would speed things up a bit.

Not too bad on your first time try with it from the vids.

Are you using RN boolits? If not, it will slow you down a bunch. I've used some of the RCBS style before & even those can slow down you speedloads. Smooooth RN like 452374s are the way to go for competions (IPSC, IDPA, etc). SWC for Bullseye matches. Any a good carry/hunting backup is the Lee 452 RF 255gr in the AutoRim or in ACP either the 200gr/255gr RF - big wide meplat.
