I use the on line program by JBM Ballistics at: http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi

You will need the BC of the bullet, weight, velocity, air temp and humidity and distance above sea level among other things. I would shoot velocity with the max powder load you plan to use or run several as that affects velocity a lot. I ran my BACO mold Creedmoor grease groove bullets and for example at 90 grains of FFG I get 1260 FPS and the drop from 100 yards to 200 yards is calculated to be 30 inches with a 540 grain bullet. Last week I started moving from 100 to 200 yards and the calculations were within 1/2 inch for bullet drop! I covered the target backer completely with white paper and laid out inch marks on the side to measure and was really happy. The first group was less than 1 MOA for 3 shots.......happy boy.

Several years ago we had a Marine sniper out at our range helping his dad set his "hunting" rifle up and it looked amazingly like the Marine's own sniper rifle. In the cap for the scope was a very small "drop table" for the ammo he used while in Iraq and we talked a bit about it. His mother sent him what he called "target rounds" from home and he used them all the time and the table was for the bullet drop out to 1200 yards. At our range he shot 5 in ONE hole at 300 yards so I guess he was pretty good! Seemed a bit high strung to me but that is expected I guess?

it is interesting that you said he was high strung old racer. a lot of coffee to stay awake in tight situations can get a shooter used to that. how ever in talking to some that has been their other things are used also. steroids and preformance enhancers have been used also. not street drugs like in vietnam but the stuff athletes use to win and be on top all the time. sad to say some men and women have ruined their kidneys doing this to stay on top. the armed services place a very high demand on every one and i hope this high strung sniper you saw wasnt into that.

"RSI Shooting Lab" (https://www.shootingsoftware.com/ballistics.htm) has an excellent plotting function for this.
