I Military Shooter I was vaguely acquainted with slapped his wife around and had his guns and license confiscated by the Police. His rifles ended up at the LGS and I bought two of them. The US built No4 Mk1 came with 50 of his reloads and I put the rifle in the safe where it has stayed for the past 6-7 years.

I was going through my big ammo locker and noticed the ammo box. I dragged it out and took it to the range today.

The loads were 174Gn Matchkings by the look of them and after screwing the sight down as far as it would go, I managed to get it shooting about 4" high at 100 yards.

The shot near the nine was my second sighter and the five shot group is above it. Got to be happy with that.

The Sierra Matchkings do best in my Cdn. Longbranch No.4 Mk1*

Man, what took you so long - I get a new toy and it's usually off to the range within a week.

Nice rifle. How early is it. I notice the button style cocking piece and cut out stock. Looks like a promising long range load too.
Be safe.

I was pretty amazed, I don't do much better with scoped rifles. I haven't got a clue what the load is, but a bit of work should solve that.

Is that a `US Property` stamped No4Mk1*? Doesn`t look like my Savage made No4.Robert

Looks like my No4Mk1 (no *), but better condition with correct cocking piece.

It is marked 'US Property' but has a large 5 or squared off 'S' on the LHS which I was told meant Savage, I may be wrong.

It has the cutout in the bolt rail rather than the little knurled, squared off button which I thought was a later cost cutting feature.

I like the cocking piece, much easier to grasp. I have never seen one like that before.

This is the other rifle I bought at the same time. It is a 7.62 conversion done by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory. They did a lot of target rifle conversions, but I have never seen a military conversion like this one. It is odd as the mag needs a bit of fitting and I'm surprised that it left the factory that way. The mag may have got separated and a replacement fitted.

It is also without any bayonet boss. Very odd. I only live 35miles West of the factory, I must take it down for the museum to identify.

How many grooves does your barrel have?

My Savage made No4Mk1* has a 2 groove barrel with the other style cocking piece on the bolt and a 2 distance flip rear sight and not the adjustable one.Robert

It is a 5 groove I am pretty sure, but I bought it because the bore was exceptionally bright. I will double check later. In the book 'With Snipers to the Reich' the author tells how to make the best of the 2 position sight using the bayonet fitted and unfitted for the various ranges.
