My little boy purchased a Taurus lever gun in .45 Colt (no mention of Rossi on said shooter) and he would like to push beyond SAAMI specs. I told him to shoot saami spec until we could make sure what was safe. Can anyone help me out?

The Taurus (use to be called Rossi??? Last I knew the Rossi rifles are sill sold under Braztech) 92 action 45 colts have been reported to be able to withstand Ruger Only 45 Colt loads. That said I have a Rossi 45 Colt and I use standard to at most 20K loads. I do have a Rossi 454 Casull so that is why I don't push on the 45 Colt.

.

Taurus & Rossi are in the same conglomerate (aka: the same company, albeit with separate production lines) - so you have a Rossi Model 92.

No disrespect, but IMHO, there's absolutely no sane reason for anybody outside an ammunition proving function, to load/shoot any firearm beyond the SAMMI specs that are in place for a shooter's safety.

Anybody that wishes .454 Casull performance, would be well advised to purchase a .454 instead of a .45 Colt.

A good read on the various 45 Colt lever guns but take not to the 92 action sections.

Taurus bought Rossi then taurused everything up.
he can push stout loads in the model 92 rifles without fear, I keep mine in the 35-k range maybe a tick more.
[like 1600 fps with a 250gr cast boolit stout]

he might wanna double check and see which barrel diameter Taurus put on this week.
seen 452 and 454.

Thanks gang for the info/advice and link. Runfiverun is 18.5grs. of 2400 under a 250 gr. out of the question? He tells me he has H110 and long shot powders, any suggestions?

not R5R but I would say you are fine with 18.5 grains of 2400 under a 250 grain boolit. I run 18 behind a 310 grain LFN style design for a Ruger Only Load out of my Ruger Bisley.

Greetings
Have several Rossi 92's in 45 Colt. You can safely shoot any safe Ruger Black Hawk 45 Colt load in the Rossi 92. Generally the listed Ruger load will do about 300fps faster in the 20 inch Rossi barrel unless you are loading a very fast pistol powder like Red Dot. Powders like 2400, 296 and 110 are very good with heavy cast in the Rossi. The very same 92 action is used with the 44 magnum so rest assured the action is easily strong enough for RBH loads in 45 Colt. Just be sure to use modern solid head brass and not the old style "balloon head" brass.

For what its worth. I have shot at least 100 Ruger only loads through my Puma/Rossi 45 Colt. I no longer load them as hot. At best my Rossi is now a range toy. A few years ago I intended to take it Javalina hunting but didn't draw a tag. Shot to shot accuracy out of mine improved considerably with milder loads.

I've loaded 300gr boolits to about 1650fps using H110. It's hard on brass, as the chamber is unfortunately large. I had a case rupture during load testing and all gases were harmlessly vented straight up. Browning knew what he was doing. Some people report having trouble at low velocities due to the slow twist.

IMHO, if you want more oomph, get a bigger gun, a Marlin 1895 comes to mind. Otherwise stick to the Saami specs, if for no other reason, liability considerations. Bear in mind that said specs include consideration of the brass construction.

If my grown up son suggested this course of action, all he would get from me would be a serious tongue lashing. Keep it safe and keep your son.

At least work up to that 18.5 gr 2400 load. Don't just jump to it!

The 18.5gr. of 2400 was for me. Sonny boy only has 296 and H110. I use a Chiappa 92 copy. Been shooting a cast gc hp 250 gr bullet and 17 gr. of 2400, hopefully a little more powder will give me a cleaner burn, but it's 2400 so probably not. I appreciate the safety first folks concern but I'm kind of a Paco Kelly Elmer Keith type (without the imagination). As far as giving another adult a tongue lashing, I've avoided it so far and hate to start at this late date.

The Rossi/Taurus is chambered for both the Ruger 480 & 454 Casull, so the action strength isn't a concern, but they both have special considerations for magazine retention. The "Ruger only" loads are far below these. I would just advise to work up to maximum loads with some caution.
