I am thinking about shooting cast bullets in my marlin 336 ,,what is the average bore size of your marlin ,and do you have to size your bullets ,can u just get a over size mold and shoot them?

google "slugging your rifle bore" Herman... you need to do it for your individual rifle... each one of them...

I don't have a 35 Rem but do have a 357 maximum and shoot the Lyman 358315 in it with complete satisfaction. It is a gas check round nose bullet. We are warned to use only flat nosed bullets in tubular magazine rifles because of the danger of a pointed bullet hitting the primer of the cartridge in front of it in the magazine, but I don't know about cast boolits.

Every direction I have seen for cast boolits say they can be shot as cast. I have not tried shooting any enough both ways, as cast and resized, to have a reasonable opinion on the subject of comparative accuracy.

Just get the Ranch Dog 190 gr and go for it. It is designed specifically for Marlins. Once cast size it down to whatever chambers easily. It may not require any sizing. It will shoot.

In this particular situation there is no need to slug your bore.

I use the RCBS 35-200-FN bullet and am well satisfied with it.

Slug your barrel or just be guessing,it is not hard and saves wasted boolits ,did not mention what rifling ,vintage of your marlin will help with sizing and a chamber cast will be a shortcut when you start loading (OAL) ,

My Marlin is pretty tight. .3578 to be exact.
I shoot the NOE copy of the RCBS 200 FN. It drops at about .360 and I size it to .359 I use wheel weights with 2% tin added.

Sure you can shoot them as cast. You will have to stay very low( under 1400fps) with your velocities if you do not put on a gas check however. There is really no reason for me to size other than to apply a gas check. I lube by hand, and use the Lee push through sizer to apply the gas check That way when they come out the lube is nicely cleaned off except in the grooves and the gas check is neatly crimped onto the boolit base.

I should also mention that I use this for hunting and therefore I have a bit more velocity behind this load. I use enough WW748 to get me up to 1950 fps. That seems to be the sweet spot in my rifle with that load. That speed is a bit more than I would usually try for. Many fellows have been there before me with this boolit and rifle combo, so I decided to go there too! No troubles at all and no worries about micro groove rifling either. This particular cast boolit engraves the rifling in my 336 Marlin and shoots very well. I mean right around the the magic inch. Never under an inch unless some fluke comes my way but not too far over either! That is all this rifle can ever do with any load so I am really happy.

I load and shoot .360" in my Marlin. I can push 190 gr boolits to 2400 fps with good accuracy and min to no leading.

My Marlin is microgroove. I don't know what the prevailing wisdom is, but unless your willing to fix your throat, I think slugging the barrel is a waste of time.

With the immediate success I had with the last 2 Marlin .35 Rems, I will offer this; The RCBS 35-200 is awesome, load and shoot as fat as will FREELY chamber, (I size to .361"), and if you are after a full power load, H-4198 is your friend.

+1 for the RCBS 35-200
COWW GC sized to .358 or .359 makes no difference on the target this is a 75 yard Target 5 shots I had glass on mine (Old eyes) when I shot this. I have since put a Skinner Peep have not had a chance to get it to the range with the peep yet
Gets boring at 50 yards just one hole

Microgroove barrels tend to like larger bullets. I size mine to .359 but many will want larger. I don't bother slugging a barrel. I have a bunch of sizers and try different sizes to see what works. Shooting is the fun part of it so I don't mind burning up some powder and primers.

I use this same mould in my .35 Remington, which is a Marlin 336. The round nose is not pointed like a spitzer bullet; it is rounded and fat. Thus, no danger of detonation. In fact, it was designed specifically for that cartridge in lever actions!

Just my theory when casting boolits, "When in doubt, go big and go hot." Use the biggest diameter that will chamber, and cast a little on the hot side for good fill-out, and so boolits will drop out of the molds easily. Then work from that point on.

As always, don't over-do-it.

"Hey Butch, do you think we used enough dynamite?" Remember that one?!!!!

I had one long, long ago and it would do 1/2" at 100 with a Hornady bullet but I never got cast to shoot. I had a Lyman mold and did not know about size then and my boolit was just too small for the bore and groove.
Take the good advise here and they will shoot great.

My 336 likes the RCBS 35-200 GC sized to .360 and double lubed with LLA. Took a large doe last month, complete pass thru. Nice hole right thru the heart at 70 yds. COWW.

I use the NOE version of the RCBS 35-200 in my 1950 Marlin 336A sized at .360 and it shoots excellent..
