I love the sound of those swiss bells! And I envy that english stocked double!

Well actually, it's a German stocked double (Merkel), but I know what you meant... :)

It was especially fun today. I had to hunt in hipboots and it was a long time before we got into the birds, but we did and then Gus did some crazy good work.

Looks like a good job. When a good dog is working I sometimes almost get lost in watching them work.

Beautiful picture!

Maybe it was here on this site I read this, "A dog is the only animal that loves you more than they love themselves."

So true, the good ones derive so much happiness from making us happy.

I live in north central Kansas, classic upland bird country, but it seems to be dying out. Don't see many phesants anymore and not many quail either. The phesant opener used to be a huge deal, not so much now.

Really nice looking birds, great dog too.

Great country up there. I hunted birds once along the Smokey Hill back when I was in grad school. There were plenty then. Now i go back once a year to shoot BPCR north of Minneapolis.

the population could be dropping due to coyotes eating their eggs, I would say pigs, but I live just west of Tulsa and they are just now getting this far north. anyway I would get into coyote hunting it is a lot of fun

Yes the coyotes wiped out our pheasant hunting here in Central Illinois back in the late 1970's. I'll go years without even seeing a pheasant.

Guys, coyotes are the best thing to ever happen to pheasants. Really. I know it ain't popular opinion but the facts are the facts. Good for ducks and any other ground nesting birds too. They are far harder on coons, skunks, opossums, and most especially foxes, which are the real egg scramblers (and the last one is a hell of a lot better hen killer as well). Coyotes eat a few pheasants, but they save more nests by reducing those other mesocarnivores. Save a pheasant - don't shoot a fox (NOT the coyote).

What has killed of your pheasants, is a success of 1. bad winters (up here in particular) 2. Wet/cold spring nesting seasons 3. Ethanol.
