Made up some two alloy boolits for deer hunting Ruger Compact in 7.62 x 39. This is the Lee 312-160-2R. Nose from ogive to tip is pure lead. I didn't think a flat meplat was needed with the nose being pure lead. The base of the boolit is ACWW + 2% tin, PC'ed with Smoke's blue powder coat. Sized .312" and gc'ed. Muzzle velocity just shy of 1800Fps.155852

These are the results on a doe @ 40 yards in heavy woods, Striking right behind front leg, complete penetration, she ran about 35-40 yards and piled up. Internals organs were soup and confetti.

Entry hit a rib going in.155854

Exit wound had two pieces of fragments hitting ribs beside main projectile which exited . Boolit behaved like Nosler Partition.

Looks like perfect results, Hickok. Great for you that all the work paid off with dividends. Great results!! How did you make those boolits??

Great results!! How did you make those boolits??I used two pots, one for the lead nose and the other with wheelweight alloy. Made a small dipper from a 9mm case, ground it down to the volume I wanted, made a handle out of wire and wrapped the case. Used this little dipper for my pure lead nose pour.

Poured lead in cavity for nose, let cool to solidify ( trial and error) then poured wheel weight alloy in. Then placed a portion of the mold into the melted wheel weight alloy until the sprue puddle on the sprue plate started to melt again. removed mold from melted alloy and allowed to cool some and dropped the booolit.

Do a search, as most of the credit for the method I used goes to BruceB. (God grant him rest and peace.)He did a good write up on casting soft point boolits. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?17546-Casting-Softnose-Bullets-From-ANY-Conventional-Moulds

As for the blue PC, I simply dry tumbled the boolits and then wiped the powder coat off of the noses with a q-tip, so I would know they were "soft-points" of two alloys. They are scuffed up some because I ran them through the magazine several times to make sure they feed alright with the soft lead tip, they did just fine.

Didn't want to be in the woods and find out the rounds wouldn't feed properly!

As the old saying goes( that'll do pig)

Its a quote from Charlottes web if you haven't seen the movie.

that is awesome! I need to do that again but follow your method. What I did did not give best results but I know it will work.

What I did did not give best results but I know it will work.I tried using split shot sinkers in the nose, but they didn't work for me. I could snap them off with my fingers. Got to reading up about it, and it seems they probably had some oxidation on them that caused them not to bond with the wheel weight alloy.

So I figured I would just pour in clean melted lead for my noses.

Babe, the movie was Babe. Good movie, though and it involved a pig.

"Some Pig!" That was Charlotte's Web. And both hogs would succumb nicely with the boolit Hickok is using, too. :bigsmyl2:

BTW, Hickok, does a FN feed through an SKS or AK well? Just curious if you happen to know.

Chris, I don't know about a flat nose in an AK, but this Lee 312-160-2R will feed through my AK. Maybe some one will chime in.

I stand corrected! I've watched so many of these movies with kids and grandkids I can't keep them straight.

"Internals organs were soup and confetti."

It's a beautiful thing.

I cast some soft nosed RCBS 180 grain FPs I planned to use in my .303 Savage, comes out to about 190 grains, should duplicate factory loadings for it.

I cast the nose using 5 .177 air gun pellets, melted in a dipper over a propane torch. You have to cast real hot to get it to work and keep the mold on a heat source for a while the melt fuses together. Mine look seamless, haven't shot any yet.

I know from muzzle loading that pure lead will expand like all get out in a deer at a lot less than 1800 FPS, so I agree, nose shape ought to be irrelevant with this method.

Rich, I agree with that. That is the proof that you have made a good soft point. When I got it "right" the boolits were smooth and seamless. (Can't see it with the PC) Just a little bit of a color change between the two different alloys.

This Lee 160 soft point performed great on such a close range shot.

The Lee 170 gr fp fed well through my sks. In fact, I haven't found a bullet design that wont feed, but I'm sure they exist.

Thanks Hickok, I had read Bruce's posting about those softpoints but, my memory ain't what it was!
