Hi all,
I recently bought a 1857 sharps rifle in .45 caliber from i.a.b brand.
Until now I shot a .458 bullet 380 grains spitzer from Pedersolli but these becomes really too expensive.
Do have any idea what for a mould I could use?
I ordered a Lee .459 500 grains but I am not sure anymore if the bullet will be too heavy. The upper loading limit for my carbine was given with 60 grains black powder maximum.
what do you think?
thanks in advance

A Sharps "percussion rifle" uses a bullet and loose powder charge, or a 'paper cartridge' composed of a paper tube tied to a special bullet with string, and that tube filled with powder.

Because the bullet must be pushed into the bore from the breech, it is ususally .451" in diameter.

The Lee 500 grain 3R bullet is for use in a cartridge gun such as the 1874 model.

Well...
seems not good for my new purchasing.
Would you have an idea where I could find such a mould?

Google up Moose moulds. That's mostly what they do is the paper cutter sharps moulds.

This particular mould is for a .54 caliber bullet ... not a .45.

Actually the one from pedersoli .458 is what I used until now with 45 grains swiss black powder.
I wanted to buy the mould but I do not want to pay the total of about 200$ it would cost to ship that from Italy to Switzerland it's a question of principle.

I have the Pedersoli Mould I got with the 63 when I got it. It is a good bullet that will roll a 5 gallon bucket across the corn field at 500 yards. It shoots great.
It's to bad you live on the other side of the pond or I would sent it to you. I don't have the rifle anymore.
The bullet shoots great with nitrated cotton copy paper that is .0014" thick and tied on using silk thread or just push a lubed bullet into the throat with a stick with out paper and pour the powder filling the chamber. That worked better for me for accuracy.

Hi lead pot, thanks for the offer. Is it a mold in.45?
actually I have a friend who settled in Canada and spend 1-2 days a week in Seattle for the work.
how much would you ask me for sending the piece to Seattle?

As he may not revisit this thread, I suggest that you send Lead pot a Private Message with that question.
