this afternoon I finally was able to give my 30-30 150gr. cast bullets that I made from a lee mold a test drive. I shot her as she was running from an overgrown field and into the strip of woods I was standing in on watch for a drive. she was only around 35-40 yards and broadside, as the bead in my peep sight hit just behind her shoulder I fired and swore I saw the impact of the hit. she went maybe 50 yards all down hill and piled up.

haven't skinned her yet to see what damage it did but exit hole was about the diameter of my thumb. lungs were damaged and heart was just about cut off from all her arteries. I guess I got the alloy about right. gotta love getting back to the very basics of making and loading your own.
thanks to all of you guys and this forum that helped me to make and load these cast rounds.

That is one hunk of a doe, Just super.
I don't hunt with rifles since my shoulders are shot and I have trouble holding up a rifle. But I have a 30-30 that my grandson can use so I would like to have your alloy too.

Way to go, Brewster! What load are you using? I'm planning to take one with the same boolit in my Marlin next year.

Wow, that's a big ol' doe for a whitetail! And what kind of rifle is that? I'm developing a hankerin' for long-barreled leverguns, I have enough carbines and the longer barrels are starting to appeal to me.

Winchester model 94 rifle, load is using the lee cast .309Ø 150 grain gas checked bullet going about 2150 fps at 10 feet from muzzle. load is 24.0 gr of IMR4198 seated in crimp groove. alloy is a mix of lead I acquired and by using the pencil test come out at around 26-28 IIRC.

Congratulations on your success. Many great meals lying there.

I have a small one in the freezer so the rest of my season will be cast only.

That gives me til January to be successful.

Plan on using the 338 and I have to order a new mold . . . Apparently I gave it away way back when!

Now if we could just get rid of this 70 degree weather!

Good morning and Congratulations !
Welcome to the lead corn cruncher slayer group of happy hunters ! That is a fine looking big doe ! Nice gift for Christmas.
There is sure is a content feeling knowing you never have to be hunting projectiles again. Far better to be making and shooting them.

Congrats! Great job! Ya'll sure grow them big up there! There are few things more satisfying than putting meat in the freezer using a boolt you cast. I'm betting this won't be the last time.

I am not an expert on cast bullets, but I would say that the bullet performed well, and I don't like to argue with success.

What a good looking deer! I don't think I've seem one with anymore fat on it than yours. She was eating well!

Brewster6514
12-25-2015, 02:48 PM
hope all that fat doesn't mean a bad winter. 53° on Christmas day is pretty warm so hopefully mother nature has it wrong this year.

Congrats on the cast Boolit deer.

I have hopes that the rain stops next week so I can seek one of the same.

Looking at thae carcass on that deer make it look like USDA Choice. It sure should eat good!
