Need help IDing a Herter swaging die.

Box says SE1A. I used a calipers on the inside and it is over a half inch. There is a dimple in the rod and a bump on the shellholder (?) part. No markings on the die other than the company name.

Herters----That's easy to identify. That is their Custom Grade,Grand Deluxe,Model Perfect,Presentation, Famous, Special, Royal,Professional,Popular,George L Herter model. Don't be fooled and buy any other----unless you turn 2 pages forward and they have another that puts it to shame.

Kinda looks like a large primer pocket swage die to me. Does the bump fit in a large primer pocket? The reason I think this is because the rod in the die looks exactly like my RCBS primer swage rod.

Yes it does fit in there. So it's a large primer pocket swage die? Cool. Is there an adapter to use the Herter SH in a modern RCBS/Lee SH ram slot?

Catalog says SE1A is Herters Primer Pocket Swaging Die. For swaging primer pockets on Government(G.I.) 30-06 and .308 case. No more hand reaming necessary!!!! Fast and accurate forms primer pocket to the correct size. Fits all reloading tools which use the standard 7/8"-14 thread size. There are several more paragraphs of information as to the fine quality---but bottom line is ONCE YOU HAVE USED THIS PRIMER POCKET SWAGER, YOU WILL USE NO OTHER KNOWN METHOD TO REMOVE THE CRIMP FROM G.I. BRASS. The 1969 price was $2.97 and a replacement swaging head was $.47. I certainly wonder why on earth anyone would ever need to replace something with that much quality---how could you possibly break it??? Oh BTW same year primers were $.69 per hundred or $5.67 thousand in lots of 10,000.

Carpetman, you're giving me flashbacks to my endless hours of perusing the very humble Herter's catalogs. I still use a lot of their tools, my favorite pistol powder measure is a Herter's.

There will never be another George Leonard Herter, that's for sure. Somebody ought to do a biography of the guy. Actually, he should have done an autobiography.

I think you will find that the swage pin fits in a standard 30-06 / 308 shellholder just like a cartridge would - at least that is how I recall the setup.

The dimple in the rod end is to clear the flash hole burrs, otherwise it makes a mess.

You asked about an adapter for shell holders?
Yes, several current outfits sell them.

I got a throw away ram from a RCBS from a guy, I think on here maybe.
Cut the end off, turned the bottom down to fit the Herter's ram and set screws.
That way I didn't change anything. Cheaper and almost as easy as buying the fitting for $15-20 bucks.
