This one came out of some one's closet .....
A friend has come across this pretty little machine that another individual wants to let go of ....
I volunteered to find out more if I could from all of the knowledgeable gents here.
The machine is a Hollywood senior turret with the fixed rod option , also has a powder dispenser by the picture.
With this , what are we looking at the monetary worth ?... ball park maybe.
Appreciate all the input ....

One of the experts should come along shortly and give you a realistic estimate of its worth. I want to follow the thread to see the comments.

Ebay, at least $500.00 , maybe 800 or more.

My guess is $350-400 for the press and maybe $80.00-100 for the powder measure. Just a guess though...

What is special about these old Hollywood presses to warrant that kind of $$? Could buy a modern Dillon 550b?

They are the "classic car" of reloading presses and as such command the high dollars from "collectors".

Well said Winelover.

Having the original Hollywood swaging rod should help the price. They're easily turned out by a competent machinist but the original rods are nicer.

Best,

Jim

550s don't load .50BMG or other large cartridges like that Hollywood will.

I've owned two Dillon 550B's and sold them both. I've still got both my Hollywood presses, if that tells you anything. My original Hollywood Senior was purchased used in 1963, and is still going strong.

Hope this helps.

Maybe the Dillon was not the best idea as an alternative being a progressive. Esthetics aside, why not a new top of the line turrent like Hornady, Lyman, RCBS, etc. Don't most presses meet their end by rusting away in a wet basement rather than being worn out?

I actually do own and use a Hornady LnL progressive press, as well as a Tri-Standard Loadamatic progressive built in the 1950's, and an RCBS Rockchucker II. The Hollywood presses were finely made machines, kind of like an old Model 12 Winchester, or the 1897 Winchesters. They don't make them like that anymore, and for those of us who appreciate fine craftsmanship, there is an appeal to the Hollywood presses.

My presses don't rust, and will probably end up in a garage sale after I'm gone, but while I'm here, they'll enjoy the finest care I can give them. It's the least I can do for the service, and enjoyment, they've given me all these years.

Hope this helps.

Sam,

Here's a link to my Loadamatic press: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?285350-Old-Machines

There is craftsmanship in the old Hollywoods, Stars, etc. The Loadamatic falls into that category as well.

Hope this helps.

that would cost a fortune to make today. RCBS made a straight line press called the Green Machine. It seems to get a lot of bad press.
