.44-40 diameter is said to be 4.27 44 magnum 4.29 looking for around a 220 grain bullet that I can use for both if possible, what do you think, Captain Lewis

my 4440 is a ruger and its had its throats opened to 4305 just like my 44mags. Ruger uses the same barrel in both. My go to bullet in the 4440 is the lyman 215 swcgc and its a darned good 44 mag bullet too. In both cases i size to 430.

What kind of gun is it? I use a 220 gr RN in a 44-40 cyl with throats opened up in an old model flat top and it shoots like a champ. Someone filed the front blade way low so that's all the gun is good for.

the pistol is a u s firearms single action in .44-4- the .44mag round is for a carbine chambered in 44 mag.

I do like Lloyd does, but my 44/40 is a rifle. I size the 44/40 boolits to .429"

You need to do some cylinder throat and bore measuring before you try the same boolit in both calibers.

I second the 'gotta measure your guns' comments. There are no
certainties in this game. Each gun is a thing unto itself. You need
to measure groove diameters of the barrels and cylinder diameter
for a revolver to have any idea of what size boolit to use, and then
you can see if there is any reasonable compromise diameter that
would work in these two guns.

Many guns are significantly different than the nominal dimensions,
more often larger than nominal than smaller, but both happen.
