A year ago this time when I shot my last buck I decided that by nexthttp://contentcache-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/#25129950) deer gun season I would be using a rifle instead of a bulky shotgun. Rifles have always catch my fancy but Ohio hasn't allowed for their use in deer gun until just a few years ago. Thing was that I did not have a rifle that fell within the newer regulations. Pennies were saved and a Marlin 1895http://contentcache-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/#16046006) Cowboy was purchased. Then the molds, dies, primers and brass. It has been a fun summer and fall of getting the rifle ready and the loads sighted in. For the time being I settled on 26 grains of old Hercules 2400, Win 8 1/2 primers and the Accurate 460-405C boolit.
Taking a quick walk through the cedars the other evening after work with about 30 minutes of light left I happened upon this button buck laying under two cedar trees looking the other way. I couldn't have been more than 15 feet from him and snapped a shot off instantaneously upon seeing his form under the branches.

Of all the years hunting with allowable guns in Ohio I have never had an animal not run upon being shot, whether it is muzzleloader, shotgun or pistol, unless the spine was taken out, until this time. This deer just went limp. Yes, I was closehttp://contentcache-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/#67378655) but I've shot other deer close, too. Got to say I was happy with the outcome of all the work, trials and effort getting to this point. Hopefully I can fill my 2nd tag before too long, as well.

Congrats A cast Boolit kill is very satisfying, you know all that work you put into this hunting season paid off. I'm more satisfied with a doe myself because that's what I hunt for.[smilie=w:

Beautiful picture. Nothing like knowing you just filled a tag for a few pennies instead of several dollars,,,,,,(and knowing you can make hundreds more!)

Now you know shooting a sleeping deer is not fair, that is like shooting pheasant on the ground.LOL I would have done the samething if I were in your shoes, and I have shot pheasant on the ground. That is another story and I don't want to take from your glory.
Way to go!!!

Chris, great post. Happy for your success!

I have shot many deer with cast in revolvers, and lever actions in .44 and .45 caliber. My next pursuit is to work up an accurate load for one of my .308's with cast and use it or my Ruger Hawkeye Compact in 7.62 x 39 using a cast boolit and hunt deer.

Now these fella's like Petroid have me slobbering for a .300 BO barrel for one of my AR's so that may be a future project!

Good morning and Congratulations !
Thank you for this excellent hunting story ! That was a fun read. Nice photo also. You done wapped that feller with an old Buff gun load. That will get the job done every time. Good on Ohio to realize hunters can safely use center fire rifles.
