Looking for a plinking load using a 160, 170, and 180 cast gc boolet. Probably using wheelwright alloy.

You do not say if it is for a bolt action or a semi

if plinking only
Bolt/ lever = Unique

Semi or for faster read the write up by the late BruceB

He did all the footwork and broke new ground for a lot of us using Cast in the 308

I use 180 Lee gas check in front of 2.5 cc (25 grains) of IMR4759. Moves them fast but not too fast, lots of loads per lb. of powder.

I'm almost finished with my 243 project, so I'll be finishing the 308 next. I'll be able to tell you whether 4227 works easily or not, but if it goes anything like the last week I'll be moving straight on to Unique like was mentioned above. Just seems like you can't go wrong with it.

Of course, this is a single shot. Not military surplus or semi auto.

According to the Lyman book, this should be in the neighborhood of 1900fps.

Gives me hope for my testing of the IMR4227. It's listed right above 4759.

Ed Harris' load of 16gr 2400 works great out of the Ruger American I recently purchased as a gift for my son. I HAD to see if it would shoot!!! It does...quite well, too.

I use the Lee 312-185 meant for the .303 British in front of 16 grains of 2400. Sized to .311" with a Hornady gas check. Works pretty good in my old thrown together Mauser. It ran just short of 1600 FPS the last time I shot any over the chronograph.

10-13 grains of Red Dot. Works just fine.

If I may tag along here, I need a load for RCBS 150 CM for my 308 bolt @ about 1000 fps. Suggestions....

Old colt,

Define " Plinking Load ", those two words don't mean the same thing to everyone.

Unique powder from 10 to 12 gns will be fine for cast boolits up to 220 grain without a gas check. My favourite goat load is 10 grains unique 205/210 grain unchecked boolit lubed with bens red. 1325fps 1"group at 55yards.

Tomorrow I should be able to post my results from my testing this weekend with unique and 4227. I found both to work, but different velocities.

Ben,
By plinking I just mean messing around shooting I have a few gongs and I did build a dueling tree for the high powers at 100 yds. As I'm new to casting I'll stick with store bought for any hunting till I get things figured out. Plus the light load may not beat me as bad in a lightweight savage

For 1000-1200 fps any standard weight boolit sans gas check over 5-7 grans of red dot in unsized brass.

The article in the first post gives a lot of information that was helpful to me when I was starting out shooting cast in rifles.

With the 5-7gr red dot, would you want a filler in the case to keep the powder next to the primer, to avoid a hang fire?

No filler with red dot.
