bullet lube, candles, or maybe soap. if ya ever get it on yer teeth you'll see it's lack of desirability as a food.

Ain't that the truth!

I'll never forget cooking some deer ribs one time; they looked great and tasted great and then after I was finished eating I noticed a coating of hard fat inside my mouth. Yuck. Nasty.

Deer fat tastes nasty in any form. Useful purposes for it might be around farm equipment, boolit lube, etc..

bird feeders thanks for the tip
she had so much on her I had to cut it away
to find my cuts even the back strap and ribs of course were
covered in thick fat
I was actually worried that the knife would slip and I would cut myself

I'm butchering a small one now, I had thought last time that I should save some fo muzzle loader lube. Might try it.

We used to run it through the grinder after all the sausge meat was run ( would clean everything out) then we rendered it out by slow cooking & added peanut butter & we had Woodpecker & Chickadee feed all winter!

No part wasted was my motto! Used all the sinuews & dried then split them for thread for leather work. Deer legs made gun racks and the larger bones were cut up for soup bones. Yeah! I bark tanned the hides too. Did a lot of neat stuff when I was younger

Render down for lube or soap. Save all my grease for soap making.

I would render it down for lube or soap. I save all my fat and grease for soap making.

Stick a candle wick in a pint or quart canning jar(suspend from a pencil with a weight on the bottom) and fill with the rendered fat. Let it harden. You now have an emergency fat candle! I di this when I have an excess of bacon fat! Smells good when they burn.

Mary, what do you use for candle wicks? Can you use some type of regular string or is it special wick string? This could be useful in an emergency situation, being able to make candles that is.

You can get wicking from ebay or hobby/craft stores.

I am not Mary, but I love her "bacon" candles. My wife makes thousands of candles each year in her job as director of an outdoor education center. Easiest wick to find is 100% cotton butcher's twine. Google it and there are many sources. We buy it in 2# spools, but it is available in smaller sizes.

I was taught to use it tying roasts, hams and racks of ribs/loins. I can still bone a roast or ham if I need too and the twine is useful. Also used to tie the wings when I cook turkey in a trash can.

In a pinch any natural fiber can be used a a wick. If the weave is too tight the fat will not travel up the wick.

I feed it to the pig or chickens. Interestingly enough, if I miss a piece when I am making jerky it actually tastes quite good after being marinated and dried.

Friend of mine has a bunch of coon dogs. Bones and fat go to him. I have rendered bear fat but never thought about using deer fat.

Plain old cotton string works, wick material is better though, lasts longer.
