The magizine is also very difficult to find for a 788 in 44 Mag.
There were not many 788 in 44 mag.

If you can find one from a different caliber 788, you may be able to cut it in half and make a new front end?

I don't know as the 30WCF bolts were much more popular than the .44 so finding a donor bolt might be hard for that idea .

I have a 788 in 44 Mag mfg in 1967; I have been watching the auction it is at $380 with 1-1/2 days left. Says the bore is dark, re-bore to .451 and re-chamber in 45 LC? 45 LC has the same rim size as a 44 Mag?

I have seen it posted before that magazines are hard to find for 788 in 44 mag. I needed one last winter and found one at Numrich after about a five minute Internet search. I remember there was also one listed on another sight for $5 or $10 more. I just checked Numrich and they show them it stock; $27.50, just in case someone needs one. Now a bolt may be a different issue.

A few years ago I ran across a Savage 340, 30-30, with a vintage side mounted scope. It was in very nice shape, except for the small issue of missing a bolt! The first center fire rifle I ever owned was a 340 in 222 and I had a bunch of other 30-30s that I shoot cast in, so I thought that was a good excuse to buying it. I figured I could find a bolt, and if not, I could sell it for parts for more than I paid. Several years later, I ran into a very sad looking 340, 30-30, for a very low price. I bought it and the bolt head spaced fine on both actions. Just a thought.

Good luck,

Jackpine

The most appealing part of the econo bolt actions of decades ago such as the Savage 340 and Remington 788 was the decidedly atypical calibers you could get such as .30 WCF and .44 Magnum. I think the Savage Axis would sell extremely well in these cartridges. I would sure buy one. .243, .308, .30'06 and so on are great cartridges but every bolt gun under the sun can be had in them.

What are they worth these days? I don't shoot mine much anymore. You'll have a better chance of finding a 30-30 bolt and then you could have a machinist make a front end for a 44

The one listed above brought $581.

The rifle listed above sold for $581; is was listed as a parts gun and had a dark bore. I saw one a few months ago bring high 900's.

The bolt body is one peice. How do you plan on making a new front? You would have cut the front of the bolt off and weld the new front on. That kind of modifications is going to be very expensive if it could safely be done.

.

FWFW, a rifle with it's bolt missing has, IMHO, a better than even chance that it might be stolen property. (jes' sayin')

The ones for rimmed cartridges are 2 piece. The front can't rotate or the extractor won't fit into its groove. They made those actions quite a few different ways and sizes.

I got a 788 with a bolt handle broken off, was easy to TIG the bolt handle back on.
The caliber was 308 Win, ran a tap in the threads after welding to clean up threads.

the dark bore don't make it a bad buy. bet it is heavy leaded
I bought a S&W 610 about 4 yrs back because it wouldn't shoot straight. Bore was black. about 2 hr with a lead remover it was as new and shoots great.
The 788 had a major problem, the locking lugs are on the back of bolt and if water/snow got in the lugs and froze then you would break the bolt handle trying to open it
only one not to trust is the 22-250 if it was shot a lot. have seen several and bores are shot out. didn't
seem to happen to the 243
that would be a nice gun for a 762-39 if you could modify a mag

I bought a bolt off a .243/788 ....... the owner was convinced he'd sell the bare receiver to another person ...... that person backed out and his bolt would not fit my hand me down (bolt-less) receiver ......... so I did the right thing ............ I bought the rest of the rifle from him and all it needs is the buba'ed trigger fixed or replaced.

Also, I resemble the statement about .22-250's in the 788 ...... my first was such a gun .......... that is after I wore it out! LOL!

There are a lot more good economical guns around these days ........ but some how ........ I don't think any of them have the lightining fast lock time of the 788 ........

I have two 788's both left handed. One in 308 and another in 6mm Rem. Both shoot very well and I wouldn't part with either. I have been told that the rear locking bolt arrangement caused case stretching, but I have not found it a problem with either rifle. My only complaint is that they are heavy.

The 30-30 and 44 are two piece bolts.
